Trump, Abbas express optimism about reaching ‘historic peace treaty’ with Israel in first meeting

US President Donald Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met for the first time, expressing optimism about rebooting peace talks between Israel and the PA, facilitated by Trump, who didn’t mention the two-state solution Abbas seeks.
Trump began his remarks in the Oval Office on Wednesday by praising Abbas for his work on the “very important” 1993 agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians, called the Oslo I Accords, “which laid the foundation for peace.” Abbas was the signatory for the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and the agreement established the PA as a self-government body in 1994.
“I want to support you in being the Palestinian leader who signs his name to the final and most important peace agreement that brings safety, stability, prosperity to both peoples and to the region,” Trump said, adding that he’s committed to working with both sides to reach such an agreement, one that “cannot be imposed by the United States or by any other nation.”
The US president promised to do “whatever is necessary” to facilitate an agreement between the Palestinians and Israelis, who “must work together to reach an agreement that allows both peoples to live, worship and thrive and prosper in peace.”
“But I would love to be a mediator or an arbitrator of a facilitator, and we will get this done,” Trump added.
The US president admired the “continued security coordination” between the PA and Israel, saying he was “actually very impressed and somewhat surprised” that “they get along unbelievably well.”
Trump warned the Palestinians, though, that “there can be no lasting peace unless the Palestinian leaders speak in a unified voice against incitement to violate and violence and hate.” He also thanked Abbas for speaking out against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
“There’s such hatred, but hopefully there won’t be such hatred for very long,” he added. “All children of God must be taught to value and respect human life and condemn all of those who target the innocent.”
Trump also outlined his administration’s efforts to create new economic opportunities for Palestinians through a “positive, ongoing partnership” between the US and the PA “on a range of issues,” including private sector development, regional security and counterterrorism. Abbas’ visit is “a demonstration of that partnership, that very special partnership that we all need to make it all work.”
The US, Abbas and the Israelis “will be working so hard” to get a peace agreement that’s “been a long time” coming, Trump vowed, turning to Abbas. “But we will be working diligently, and I think there’s a very, very good chance, and I think you feel the same way.”
Abbas began his remarks, which were translated from Arabic, by expressing optimism that there will be a deal “based on the vision of the two states, a Palestinian state with its capital of East Jerusalem that lives in peace and stability with the state of Israel based on the borders of 1967.”
A two-state solution between Israel and Palestine would “give a great impetus to the Arab peace initiative,” Abbas continued, and enable his country “to fight and deter terrorism, and fight the criminal ISIS group, ISIS that… has nothing to do with our noble religion.”
Trump, with his “great negotiating ability” will be the key to a successful and “historic peace treaty,” Abbas said, because of his determination and desire to get it done. The deal would not just be about a peaceful, two-state solution, but also about solving the issue of refugees and prisoners “according to international law.”
“It’s about time for Israel to end its occupation of our people and of our land after 50 years,” Abbas said. “We are the only remaining people in the world that still live under occupation,” and his people “want for Israel to recognize the Palestinian state, just as the Palestinian people recognize the state of Israel.”
Abbas promised that Palestinians are raising “our youth… on a culture of peace,” and that the Holy Land will become a place “where the three monotheist religions thrive… in an environment of security, peace, and stability and love for all.”
The Palestinian leader concluded his remarks by turning to Trump and saying in English: “Now, Mr. President, with you we have hope.”
Trump noted that he and Abbas have spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as other Israeli and Palestinian leaders about moving forward with the peace process, “which hopefully will lead to peace over the course of my lifetime.”
“I’ve always heard that perhaps the toughest deal to make is the deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Trump said. “Let’s see if we can prove them wrong.”
Neither leader mentioned that Hamas, the governing authority of the Gaza Strip, released a new, 42-page charter on Tuesday that explicitly discusses accepting the concept of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, marking perhaps the best acceptance of a two-state solution by Abbas’ political rivals. They also ignored that Trump is giving “serious consideration” to moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, according to Vice President Mike Pence, which would characterize a major change in American foreign policy, one that could strain relations between the US and the PA.
During a private meeting with Abbas, Trump "raised concerns about the payments to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails who have committed acts of terror and to their families and emphasized the need to resolve this issue,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. (Emphesis added.)

Matthew 16:18, "The gates of Hell shall not prevail against it!'
When I was a little boy and I heard the preachers use this verse,
the way they interpreted it, it sounded as though the Church was
pictured standing on a big rock, and, though all Hell was pounding on
its gates, Hell couldn't triumph over the Church. The whole way they
had it pictured was the church building standing there on the Rock,
Christ Jesus, and the fires of Hell lapping against its
fortifications, but the Church standing firm on the defensive all
bottled up in its little fortress, and Hell and the Devil and all the
demons couldn't get in. And that's exactly the way it was pictured,
exactly the way the Church operates and the Christians act!--A "Hold
the Fort" purely defensive warfare, a battle for mere
survival.
This is not God's picture at all! That isn't what the
Scripture says at all in this verse. Jesus is the one who said it,
and He said it to Peter when Peter confessed that Jesus was the
Christ, the Messiah, the Saviour, the Son of God. Jesus told Peter,
"Upon this Rock (--the fact that I am Christ, the Anointed, the
Saviour, the Only Foundation--) will I build My Church." He was
literally saying, "Upon Me will I build My Church!"
Now
notice the rest of the verse. As Jesus continues His declaration, He
says, "And the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it"--the
Church. In other words, the gates of Hell will not be able to defend
themselves against the Church. The Gates of Hell itself--the Devil's
territory--his fortresses--Satan's strongholds-his gates--will not be
able to withstand the onslaughts of the Church--the attacks of God's
people against the Enemy's territory. The gates of Hell shall not
prevail! The gates of Hell will not be able to withstand
ourattacks.
It's a case of mistaken identity, and probably, some
of the misunderstanding has come from the misuse of the word
"prevail". The Lord didn't misuse it: the original Greek
word He used here did not mean to "conquer" or "overcome",
as is the accepted meaning of "prevail" in most of today's
dictionaries. But the word Jesus used meant to "stand strong"
or "withstand strongly", and what He was saying was that
the gates of Hell would not be able to stand strong or withstand or
be very strong against the attacks of the forces of God. It could be
that our modern usage of the word "prevail" has changed its
meaning through the years since the King James translation, when it
is possible the word "prevail" did convey the correct
meaning of "stand strong against". Otherwise, it was a very
poor choice of a word by the translators to define the Greek word
which meant to "stand strong", because our usual present
meaning of the word "prevail" in English means to "conquer"
or "overcome", just the opposite of what Jesus was talking
about! Furthermore, the word "prevail" is only used one
time in this sense of "overcoming" or "conquering"
in the 67 times it is used in the whole Bible. So therefore, its
meaning has apparently changed through the years, since its
origin.
The picture is not of the Church standing fast behind its
closed doors while all hell attacks, but the picture Christ painted
was of Hell trembling behind its closed doors, while the Church was
in an all-out attack against Hell's gates, which were collapsing and
crumbling under the weight of the power of God through His Church.

NEW EVIDENCE SHROUD DATES TO 1ST CENTURY
Roman numismatist identifies coins covering eyes

An expert on ancient Roman coins say he has identified those that cover the eyes of the Man of the Shroud, providing more evidence that the ancient burial cloth could have been used to cover the body of Jesus.
Agostino Sferrazza, a numismatist, concludes in an interview with the French-language RCF Liège, the coins were minted in in the days of Pontius Pilate in the year A.D. 29.
Images of the coins were first observed in the eye sockets of the Man of the Shroud in 1976, when 3-D projection techniques were used to evaluate it. Researchers noted the presence of small bulges on the ocular orbit bones which wouldn’t match any possible morphological particularities. The hypothesis states these might have been leptons: small coins of low value that were common in Israel during the Roman occupation.
Using advanced technologies, researchers have tried to identify drawings and inscriptions on the coins. On the disc covering the right eye, apparently a “lituus” (a curved Roman-style augural staff) can be observed. On the disc over the left eye, there is what appears to be a sacrificial cup.
Besides the drawings, researchers have managed to read the letters YKAI in the coins. This is thought to be the visible part of the word “TIBERIOY KAICAPOC,” Greek for Tiberius Caesar. This would be a strong indication that these coins are comparable with other currencies from the Roman era, and might indeed be pieces that were being used at the time of Jesus’ Passion.
In his interview with RCF Liège, Agostino Sferrazza supports the theory of the authenticity of the pieces and dates them to the time of Pontius Pilate. This theory is based on the images produced by computer scientist Nello Balossino, an associate professor at the Turin Faculty of Sciences, who succeeded in bringing out an image of the sacrificial cup on the right eye of the Man of the Shroud. According to Agostino Sferazza, there is no doubt: these pieces were indeed coined in 29 A.D.

I was in college during the fall of 1971 when John Lennon released “Imagine.” I vividly remember sitting around the frat house my freshmen year sucking down the brewskys with my buddy’s as we pondered the profundity of Lennon’s remarkable anthem, part of the final flock of baby-boomers who left home to follow the utopian visions floating on the last vestiges of the rebellion of the Sixties.
All of the “make love, not war” rhetoric had come crashing down the year before with the killing of four college students at Kent State University. Like so many movements before, so much of the laughter died in sorry as we watched the standoff between the Ohio National Guard and the grand-parents of today’s godless millenials end in what Crosby, Stills, and Nash forever etched into the American psyche…Four Dead In O Hi O….today…May 4th, 1970.
With the arrival of the Beatles in 1964 young Americans were conflicted about which America they were going to pursue. The anti Viet Nam left or the utopian “Tune in, Turn on, and drop out” drug culture of Timothy Leary. We watched a man land on the moon; Witnessed the assassination of three young political leaders; and the first-ever defeat of the American Military machine.
The turbulent Sixties bowed their knee to the decade of disco and once again all seemed right in America. But the seeds of discontent planted in the hearts of the children of WWII grew silently in the hearts of the hippy generation until the planting done by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Bob Dylan et al finally bore its fruit.
A wise man once told me that you could judge what kind of parent you had been by looking at your grandchildren. For some strange reason the fruit took a generation to ferment, and it was not until we were able to look two generations into the future that we could truly see what kind of crop the Sixties had born. Sowing to the wind had reaped a whirlwind.
The seeds of rebellion grow deep and unfortunately today we are able to look across the fruited plain and find much of the crop dotting the landscape to be unrecognizable. The children of the Great Depression, nurtured on the Bible and corrected by the belt, spawned a rebellious crop who rejected everything that their parents had stood for.
Jesus had warned us “what does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul.” Somewhere along the way we lost it…our soul. Walking dead men is what a famous man once called it…a generation that is void of values and far too in love with themselves. The Greatest Generation has spawned the Zombie Generation.
It was an evolution that we may never recover from.
I turned 64 this year and with a sense of regret on my birthday I serenaded my precious wife with another Lennon/McCartney favorite:
When I get older, losing my hair many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine, Birthday greeting bottle of wine?
If I stay out till quarter to 3 will you lock the door?
Will you still need me; will you still feed me, when I’m 64?
It grieves me to see how shallow of a life we have passed on to our grandchildren.
The hippies of the Sixties turned the tables on us and we were unaware of the lasting impact of their youthful fling. Today, as we peek over our slowly drooping shoulders we can truly understand the Biblical admonition:
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Galations 6:7-8
Christianity is now counter-culture. Those of us who believe in traditional family/Biblical values are now the outcasts…the Deplorables. The Bible teaches us that there is nothing new under the sun…and we have once again we have repeated the mistakes of our fore-fathers. We have strayed from the Word of God and we have not “diligently taught it to our children.” In most families today the grandchildren do not share the same values as their grandparents.
In the name of progress we have regressed. We have taught our children to seek first the things of this world and are shocked to find that they have no desire for the Kingdom of God.
If you are a Bible believing Christian in today’s world you are a freak. In this nation today the term Christian has become meaningless. I regularly find myself crossing paths with Bible-less Christians. They have walked and aisle, said a prayer, “invited Jesus into their heart”, but there has been very little change in the manner of fruit that they bear.
I don’t know if you have noticed it or not but the moral condition of this nation continues to darken. The church, which was once the salt of the earth and the light of the world, has been reduced to a flickering candle in a dark and dusty nation.
The opportunities to shine the light are easy to find. All you have to do is stick your head outside your window. There used to be a church on every corner and the 10 Commandments were posted in every schoolhouse. The soul…the glue of the nation… was once a set of common Christian values that were taught in our schools.
Look around you. The glue is gone. America is a soul-less nation. John Lennon rules the day.

Cryogenically frozen brains will be 'woken up' and transplanted in donor bodies within three years, claims surgeon

People who have had their brains cryogenically frozen could be 'woken up' within three years, a pioneering Italian surgeon has claimed.
Professor Sergio Canavero, Director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, is aiming to carry out the first human head transplant within 10 months and then wants to begin trials on brain transplants.
If the procedures are successful, he believes that frozen brains could be thawed and inserted into a donor body.
Hundreds of people who are dying or paralysed have had their bodies or brains cryogenically preserved in the hope that medical science will be able to bring them back to life and cure their conditions.
Although many experts are sceptical that huge organs like the brain can be thawed without damage, Prof Canavero said he believes the first frozen head could soon be resurrected.
Speaking to the German magazine Ooom, he said he planned to awaken patients frozen by the Alcor Life Extension Foundation which is based in Arizona.
"We will try to bring the first of the company's patients back to life, not in 100 years. As soon as the first human head transplant has taken place, i.e. no later than 2018, we will be able to attempt to reawaken the first frozen head," said Prof Canavero.
"We are currently planning the world's first brain transplant, and I consider it realistic that we will be ready in three years at the latest.
"A brain transplant has many advantages. First, there is barely any immune reaction,which means the problem of rejection does not exist.
"The brain is, in a manner of speaking, a neutral organ. If you transplant a head with vessels, nerves, tendons and muscles, rejection can pose a massive problem. This is not the case with the brain."
However Prof Canavero admitted that there could be physical and psychological problems which come with putting a brain in an entirely different body.
"What many be problematic, is that no aspect of your original external body remains the same. Your head is no longer there; your brain is transplanted into an entirely different skull.
"It creates a new situation that will certainly not be easy."
However British scientists are skeptical about whether frozen organs as complex as the brain could ever be fully restored. When the High Court last year ruled that teenage girl could be cryogenically preserved, experts said the chances of revival were "infinitesimal".
Clive Coen, Professor of Neuroscience at King’s College London, said: “The advocates of cryogenics are unable to cite any study in which a whole mammalian brain, let alone a whole mammalian body, has been resuscitated after storage in liquid nitrogen.
“Even if reviving that body were possible - it isn't - all the complicated organs would have been wrecked from the start, and warming them up again would wreck them further.
“Irreversible damage is caused during the process of taking the mammalian brain into sub-zero temperatures. The wishful thinking engendered by cryogenics companies is irresponsible."
Prof Canavero is working with a Chinese team of doctors led by Dr Xiaoping Ren, of Harbin Medical Centre who helped perform the first successful hand transplantation in the US. The technology to carry out the world's first head transplant is expected to be in place by the end of the year, and then the team will then need to find a suitable donor body.
Although Russian computer scientist Valery Spiridonov, who suffers spinal muscular atrophy, had volunteered to become the first head transplant patient, the team have since said the first trial is likely to be carried out on someone who is Chinese, because the chance of a Chinese donor body will be higher. Prof Canavero said a 'high number' of people had volunteered for the transplant.
Last year, the team announced they had successfully carried out a head transplant on a monkey, and released images from the procedure.
Prof Canavero said if the human head transplant works, it could have fundamental implications for human consciousness and even religion.
"In a few months we will sever a body from a head in an umprecedented medical procedure. In this phase, there is no life activity, not in the brain, not anywhere else in the body.
"If we bring this patient back to life we will receive the first real account of what actually happens after death. The head transplant gives us the first insight into whether there is an afterlife, a heaven, a hearafter.
"If we are able to prove that our brain does not create consciousness, religions will be swept away forever. They will no longer be necessary, as humans no longer need to be afraid of death. We no longer need a Catholic Church, no Judaisim, and no Islam because religions in general will be obsolete.
"It will be a turning point in human history."

'Watt' a Schocker! New DARPA Project Seeks to Electrically Rewire Human Brains

The brain is often compared to a computer, a thrumming mass of circuitry, software and wires. If that's the case, it's surely possible to rewire it - to ensure mankind's onboard central processing unit is the best it can be.
That's the theory behind the latest project from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the US military's shadowy research branch. It aims to enhance human cognitive abilities by activating "synaptic plasticity" — under the banner of Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT).
The idea was inspired by recent research, suggesting the stimulation of peripheral nerves, which relay signals between the brain, the spinal cord and the rest of the body, enhance an individual's ability to learn, via triggering the release of neurochemicals that reorganize connections in the brain.
Under the auspices of the project, DARPA is funding eight separate projects targeting those nerves with electrical stimulation, the ultimate objective being to translate those findings into real-world applications that boost military training regimens.
For example, allowing a soldier to learn a new skill (such as a foreign language) in weeks rather than years. If successful, such an innovation would have a huge impact on the armed forces — and the wider world.
One team, at Johns Hopkins University, will focus on speech and hearing, another at the University of Florida perception, executive function, decision-making, and spatial navigation in rodents, another at Arizona State University visual, sensory and motor functions.
There are already a number of products on the market offering cognitive, psychological, and physical performance enhancement — although whether that offer is genuine is debatable. Nonetheless, there are real world examples of "brain zapping" technology being used in certain spheres — US basketball team Golden State Warriors claim it gives their players the edge in training. In November 2016, US military scientists claimed to have artificially enhanced cognitive skills in staff using electrical brain stimulators.
Still, it is not entirely understood how these devices work, if they actually do — DARPA program is to settle this debate, testing the efficacy of both implanted and non-invasive devices to understand not only whether they actually work, but if so, how. If there is indeed a link between neurostimulation and improved learning capabilities, the program will enter its second phase, and design devices that enhance training in foreign language learning, image analysis, and spatial navigation tasks.
The University teams involved have hitherto focused on repairing damaged brain circuits, and using targeted plasticity therapy to treat afflictions such as PTSD.
The big question now is whether their experience in recovering lost or deteriorated functions can translate into facilitating the addition of new functions and abilities.

Not everyone likes to hear about the threat of nuclear war. Some find refuge in denial and say that nuclear war is impossible because it makes no sense. Unfortunately, humankind has a long record of doing things that make no sense.
In previous posts in recent years I have pointed out both written documents and changes in US war doctrine that indicate that Washington is preparing a preemptive nuclear attack on Russia and China. More recently, I have shown that Washington’s demonization of Russia and President Putin, the incessant lies about Russian deeds and intentions, and the refusal of Washington to cooperate with Russia on any issue have convinced the Russian government that Washington is preparing the Western populations for an attack on Russia. It is obvious that China has come to the same conclusion.
It is extremely dangerous to all of mankind for Washington to convince two nuclear powers that Washington is preparing a preemptive nuclear strike against them. It is impossible to imagine a more reckless and irresponsible act. Yet this is precisely what Washington has done.

Careful studies have convinced the Russians that Washington is investing in and arranging components that have no other function than to devastate Russia and cripple the country’s retaliatory capability. As I explained previously, the theory behind this insane scheme is that after America’s preemptive strike Russia will be so devastated that Russia would not retaliate with any remaining forces out of fear that Washington would launch a second major strike. Washington also plans to use agents in place to assassinate as many members as possible of the Russian government, thus leaving the government in confusion without leadership.
Yes, the insane American/Israeli neoconservatives are this determined to exercise hegemony over the world.
Yes, Washington is sufficiently criminally insane to risk the destruction of life on earth based on the supposition that Washington’s offense will work perfectly and Russia and China’s capabilities will be so degraded that no retaliatory response will occur.
One might hope that the American and Western populations would be outraged that Washington is so power-crazed that Washington is subjecting all life to such risks. But there is no sign of an anti-war movement. The Western leftwing has degenerated into Identity Politics in which the only threat comes from white heterosexual males who are portrayed as misogynists, racists, and homophopes. The Western leftwing is no longer war-conscious. Indeed, the leftwing has become diverted into such silly irrelevancies as transgender rights to toilets of their choice. The impotence of the Western left is so overwhelming that the left might as well not exist.
Where then is the hope? Russia and China cannot simply sit there and await America’s preemptive nuclear strike.
Possibly Washington does not intend a preemptive strike, but only to convince Russia and China that Washington’s preparations give Washington so much predominance in a conflict that Russia and China will submit to Washington’s hegemony. But this interpretation of Washington’s intention implies no less risk. Why would Russia and China wait for Washington to complete its preparations for war, preparations that permit Washington to turn Russia and China into puppet states?
The US military/security complex has clearly prevailed over Trump’s intention to normalize relations between the US and Russia, and anti-Russian venom continues to pour out of NATO and Washington’s European vassal states. The majority of the American people seem to have accepted the propaganda that Russia is the number one threat to the United States. The chances are high that life on earth is approaching its end. The responsibility lies heavily on the American people, whose success, due to the mistakes of others, made Americans think that they are exceptional and privileged. Unaware of the inhumane threat to all life that is embodied in the neoconservative claim that Americans are exceptional and indispensable, the self-satisfied American public is unaware of the consequences of such hubris. Hubris is leading them, and the entire world, to slaughter in thermo-nuclear war.
The neoconservative claim of American exceptionalism is the identical claim made for Germans by Hitler. If Americans are indispensable, everyone else is dispensable and can be “bombed into the stone age” as one US government official put it, or nuked as Washington intends to do to Russia and China. The claim of American exceptionalism is not accepted by Russia and China. Therefore, the insane, crazed monsters who rule over the West in Washington are bringing life on earth to an end.
And there are no protests. The idiot British, the idiot Germans, the idiot French, Italians, Canadians, Australians, Belgians, Greeks, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, rally behind the insanity that is Washington.

Political and racial tensions in post-apartheid South Africa have become so great that the minority white population is now at risk of being murdered on a mass scale, says civil defense expert Simon Roche.
Roche heads the HQ of Suidlanders, the world’s largest non-state civil defense organization located in South Africa, which represents and seeks to protect the country’s minority Christian white population in the event of an ethnic civil war.
Roche told Infowars that leftist South African leaders have in recent months threatened “the slaughter of all whites, and the removal of all whites within five years,” prompting Suidlanders to prepare for a surprise civil war event which they now believe is imminent.
“Then we would, in such an open civil war, in such a crisis, gather our people together and seek sanctuary in a remote location and then to remove ourselves from being wiped out or slaughtered,” Roche said.
Dr. Greg Stanton, founder of human rights group Genocide Watch who accurately predicted the Rwandan genocide in 1994, warned that the increased killings of white farmers in South Africa are being carried out for the sole purpose of extermination and seem to be directed by government elements, Roche noted.
“In other words, our [South African] government is at least tacitly complicit in these astronomical crime rates,” he said. “State-sponsored genocide, one arm’s length removed.”
“And he [Stanton] explained how he believed it was a low-intensity conflict to erode the periphery of the white population as a preparation for something bigger.”
Following anti-white rhetoric made by South African president Jacob Zuma last March, where he called for confiscating white-owned land and breaking up white-owned businesses, Roche said that it’s time for white South Africans to prepare themselves for civil war.
“It’s not about taking up arms, it’s about retiring from the threat,” Roche said. “There’s this intractable tension that seems to be building in our country, where the two parties can never be reconciled, and the stronger party is openly declaring that it will remove the weaker party within five years, slaughter them all, take all of their lands.”
Suidlanders has a large-scale evacuation protocol in place in case an ethnic civil war happens, designed to remove roughly 20% of the estimated 4.8 million white South Africans safely from the embattled region.
“We’re hoping to save about 800,000, perhaps a million, which is our goal,” Roche said, adding that small isolated groups must link with other nearby groups for safety to then move toward safe havens. “Our evacuation protocol is based largely on the individual taking care of themselves.”
The high murder rate of white farmers in recent months has garnered attention abroad after a British-South African family was brutally murderedearlier this year, highlighting the looming ethnic divisions still plaguing South Africa.

‘Breaking point’: Puerto Rico files for historic $70bn bankruptcy

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is seeking the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in US history, after failed negotiations with creditors over its $70 billion debt crisis. That’s more than four times the debt Detroit collapsed under.
On Wednesday, the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico announced they had moved to place the US territory into federal bankruptcy court, making it the largest entity of the US government to seek refuge from creditors in the courts in history.
Chairman of the Oversight Board José Carrión said the filing was made to “provide a method for the Commonwealth and its instrumentalities to achieve fiscal responsibility and access to the capital markets,” according to a press release.
US territories are barred from filing for a traditional bankruptcy like most US cities or states. Last year, Congress approved the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) to address the impending financial crisis Puerto Rico was already facing.
Under the PROMESA bill, the oversight board and the Title III process were created. Title III, which is similar to the Chapter 9 bankruptcy, allows Puerto Rico and other US territories to restructure their debt under the supervision of a federal judge.
The announcement came a day after major creditors sued Puerto Rico over defaults to its bonds. The Commonwealth held several meetings with creditor representatives to come to an agreement. However, on Monday at midnight, a temporary court stay that protected Puerto Rico from lawsuits expired and negotiations were ended.
“We have sustained our position to negotiate in good faith, but before the current scenario, we choose to protect our people,” Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello said in a tweet Wednesday.
Rossello sent a letter to the Financial Oversight and Management Board on Tuesday, saying he hopes the Title III proceedings will “accelerate the negotiation process, leading to as much creditor consensus where possible and achieving where necessary a prompt and efficient judicial resolution of any issues or disputes.”
Ted Hampton, an analyst at Moody’s Investor Service, says the bankruptcy process is a “positive step.”
"Although a court proceeding will take considerable time and likely involve losses for all Puerto Rico bondholders, it will be an orderly process," Hampton says.
On Wednesday, the oversight board declared the Commonwealth was “unable to provide its citizens with effective services,” according to court filings obtained by The Deal.
That document shows Puerto Rico’s 10-year recession has led them to declare a “fiscal and socioeconomic crisis without precedent” in its history. Since 2007, the Commonwealth said it has seen a 14 percent decline in gross national product, a 23 percent decrease in employed persons and a 10 percent drop in population.
According to the US Census Bureau, 46 percent of Puerto Rico’s residents live below federal poverty levels, compared to the national average of 14 percent and 36 percent in Detroit.
Puerto Rico has approximately $74 billion of bond debt and $48 billion of unfunded pension liabilities. The previous largest public bankruptcy in the US was set by Detroit in 2013 when it declared a total of $18 billion of bond debt and retirement obligations.
“The result is that Puerto Rico can no longer fully pay its debt and pay for government services. Nor can Puerto Rico refinance its debt—it no longer has access to the capital markets,” the oversight board said in the court filing. “In short, Puerto Rico’s crisis has reached a breaking point.”
Puerto Rico’s current fiscal plan sets aside $800 million a year for debt payments, however, it is only a fraction of the $35 billion it owes in interest in payments over the next 10 years. The cost of fully paying off their debt would be around $3.5 billion a year.

A six-year-old girl who has been mute since birth has uttered her first words - saying 'I love you' to a donkey.
Amber Austwick stunned her parents when she told a rescue donkey called Shocks that she loved him, having never spoken a word before.
The family, from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, visited The Donkey Sanctuary near their home, so Amber could pet the animals as therapy.
Amber developed a special bond with Shocks, who had been rescued from abuse, so Tracy, 39, took her daughter there as often as possible.
After weeks of bonding, Amber said her first words.
Tracy said: 'It was such an emotional moment. I couldn't believe my daughter had finally found her voice.
'Once she met Shocks he brought her out of her shell, she's a lot more confident with him and with friends at school who she loves to talk to about him and the donkey sanctuary.
'Some friends of ours we met in hospital who also had a premature baby with complications suggested we tried out the sanctuary.
'They said to us about the donkeys and so in 2012 we went there and found Shocks who had arrived at the sanctuary two years earlier.
'It was quite scary really, Shocks was in the arena and the riding instructor took little Amber to him and I found it scary for me because Shocks was so much bigger than her.
'But Amber wasn't scared and Shocks was really excited to meet her and they've kept that bond ever since.'
Parents Julian and Tracy could not have anticipated just how effective the therapy would be and after several visits their mute daughter started to talk.
Twins Amber and Hope were born 20 minutes apart in June 2010 and were hurried to intensive care where their breathing was assisted while covered in bubble wrap.
Hope weighing 1lb 12oz and Amber 1lb 9oz both suffered bleeds to their lungs and had their own separate complications but when Hope got stronger Amber needed a tracheotomy.
The emergency operation saved her life but restricted air to her vocal cords causing her to be mute and completely unable to express herself through laughter or words.
Shocks was found lying almost strangled with a rope around his neck on an Irish farm.
His owner thought pouring bleach over his horrific wounds and sores would help him recover but having been given a new lease of life, Amber has been as much therapy to him as he has to her.
Tracy loved the sanctuary so much that she now works there meaning the family have grown only closer to the rescued donkey.
She said: 'When we have a study club at the sanctuary Amber will always visit Shocks and she still sees him whenever she can.
'He's part of the family now he's really lovely and so patient with Amber.
'I think donkeys are a lot calmer and they're more patient with children with special needs than ponies.
'She was cleaning his eyes as recently as last week which she really enjoyed.
'Her speech is getting better and she has a speaking valve which forces air out of her mouth which really helps.
'When she does struggle for breath such as in PE at school she needs to turn it for an extra breath.'
Father Julian Austwick said: 'We could see how strong a bond they had almost straight away by the way they were both so gentle with each other.
'Shocks would lower his head to her and would allow her to hold him around his neck and they really seemed smitten.'

Doesn’t the body adjust pH on its own?
Answer according to The Hearty Soul: Yes it can, but it does so at a price. The normal pH for all tissues and fluids in the body, except the stomach is alkaline. With the exception of blood, all of the body systems have a wide pH range, in part so they can shift to maintain the blood pH, which must be maintained at the very narrow margin of 7.35 to 7.45. For example, if the system becomes too acidic, the blood will take alkaline forming elements from the digestive enzyme system of the small intestine. This now creates a less than optimal environment for proper digestion. So while the body can adjust pH on its own, it does so at a price to other systems in the body, which can lead to additional health problems.
Start by learning what your pH Levels are
pH testing is important because it allows an individual to get a numeric representation of the current level of acidification in their body. A healthy average pH reading will range anywhere from 6.75 to 7.25. The optimal pH numeric reading is 7.36. Taste alone won’t tell you if food is acidic or alkaline
An example, most people think of lemons as acidic, while it is classified as an acidic fruit, it is actually an alkaline forming food. During the process of digestion the acids are oxidized into carbon dioxide and water, therefore they do not create an acid condition in the system.
Calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and sodium are the main alkalizing minerals. Foods that are high in this minerals are considered alkaline forming food. Most foods have both acid and alkaline minerals in them. If acidic minerals are greater in concentration than that food is considered acidic and vice versa.
The body has its limits
The body has limits for how much it can compensate for acid imbalance. Therefore food intake plays a critical role in maintaining the acid-alkaline balance. Many diseases and general malaise are the result of the body’s attempt and failure to rebalance the internal environment.
