'Christianity as default is gone': the rise of a non-Christian Europe

Figures show a majority of young adults in 12 countries have no faith, with Czechs least religious

Europe’s march towards a post-Christian society has been starkly illustrated by research showing a majority of young people in a dozen countries do not follow a religion.

The survey of 16- to 29-year-olds found the Czech Republic is the least religious country in Europe, with 91% of that age group saying they have no religious affiliation. Between 70% and 80% of young adults in Estonia, Sweden and the Netherlands also categorise themselves as non-religious.

The most religious country is Poland, where 17% of young adults define themselves as non-religious, followed by Lithuania with 25%.

In the UK, only 7% of young adults identify as Anglican, fewer than the 10% who categorise themselves as Catholic. Young Muslims, at 6%, are on the brink of overtaking those who consider themselves part of the country’s established church.

The figures are published in a report, Europe’s Young Adults and Religion, by Stephen Bullivant, a professor of theology and the sociology of religion at St Mary’s University in London. They are based on data from the European social survey 2014-16.

Religion was “moribund”, he said. “With some notable exceptions, young adults increasingly are not identifying with or practising religion.”

The trajectory was likely to become more marked. “Christianity as a default, as a norm, is gone, and probably gone for good – or at least for the next 100 years,” Bullivant said.

But there were significant variations, he said. “Countries that are next door to one another, with similar cultural backgrounds and histories, have wildly different religious profiles.”

The two most religious countries, Poland and Lithuania, and the two least religious, the Czech Republic and Estonia, are post-communist states.

The trend of religious affiliation was repeated when young people were asked about religious practice. Only in Poland, Portugal and Ireland did more than 10% of young people say they attend services at least once a week.

In the Czech Republic, 70% said they never went to church or any other place of worship, and 80% said they never pray. In the UK, France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands, between 56% and 60% said they never go to church, and between 63% and 66% said they never pray.

Among those identifying as Catholic, there was wide variation in levels of commitment. More than 80% of young Poles say they are Catholic, with about half going to mass at least once a week. In Lithuania, where 70% of young adults say they are Catholic, only 5% go to mass weekly.

According to Bullivant, many young Europeans “will have been baptised and then never darken the door of a church again. Cultural religious identities just aren’t being passed on from parents to children. It just washes straight off them.”

The figures for the UK were partly explained by high immigration, he added. “One in five Catholics in the UK were not born in the UK.

“And we know the Muslim birthrate is higher than the general population, and they have much higher [religious] retention rates.”

In Ireland, there has been a significant decline in religiosity over the past 30 years, “but compared to anywhere else in western Europe, it still looks pretty religious”, Bullivant said.

“The new default setting is ‘no religion’, and the few who are religious see themselves as swimming against the tide,” he said.

“In 20 or 30 years’ time, mainstream churches will be smaller, but the few people left will be highly committed.”

Actor Dennis Quaid is set to hit the big screen on March 16 in the new movie “I Can Only Imagine,” a feature film inspired by Mercy Me’s hit song by the same name.

Quaid, who plays character Arthur Millard — real-life father of Mercy Me lead singer Bart Millard — revealed in a video clip that his Christian roots run deep.

“I grew up in the Baptist church, went to Sunday school and then got baptized when I was 9,” he said, going on to explain that he eventually went on to travel the world and become a seeker. “I read the Bible cover to cover.”

In the end, he said he embarked on a journey to discover God, and eventually came to a conclusion.

“For me, it’s Jesus … there really is redemption in that,” he said. “That was the inspiration.”

Turkey hints at forming 5-million-strong alliance against Israel

WASHINGTON – When Turkey’s semi-official newspaper Yeni Safak called for urgent action in forming a 57-nation “Army of Islam” to besiege and attack Israel, a suggestion undoubtedly approved with at least a wink and nod by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, it would signal the possible intent to create the largest military force on the planet – one nearly as large as the total population of the Jewish state.

The report came just ahead of the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and was published under the headline, “What if an Army of Islam was formed against Israel?” It was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

But it wasn’t a rhetorical question. It was actually a suggestion to combine the military forces of all Islamic countries to overwhelm the Israeli army in manpower, budget and equipment – even boasting with statistics.

On December 12, 2017, ahead of the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, the Turkish daily Yeni Şafak, which is close to Erdoğan and his ruling AKP party, published an article titled “A Call for Urgent Action,” which also appeared on the paper’s website under the title “What If an Army of Islam Was Formed against Israel?” The article called on the 57 member states of the OIC to form a joint “Army of Islam” to besiege and attack the state of Israel. It notes that such a joint army will greatly exceed the Israeli army in manpower, equipment and budget, and presents statistics to prove this. It also advocates establishing joint bases for the army’s ground, air and naval forces that will arrive from all over the Muslim world to besiege Israel, while noting that Pakistan, as the only nuclear country, has “a special status” among the OIC countries. An interactive map provides information on military forces stationed in various locations and the role they can play in the potential joint Muslim attack on Israel.

Much of the information in the article was provided by Turkey’s SADAT International Defense and Consulting Company, which provides consultancy on defense and warfare, both conventional and unconventional, and on military organization, training and gear. The company promotes pan-Islamic military cooperation. According to its mission statement, it seeks “to establish defense collaboration and defense industry cooperation among Islamic countries, to help the Islamic world take its rightful place among the superpowers by providing … strategic consultancy and training services to the militaries and homeland security forces of Islamic countries.”

The SADAT company was founded by Erdoğan’s senior adviser on military affairs, retired General Adnan Tanrıverdi, and is chaired by his son, Melih Tanrıverdi. Adnan Tanrıverdi served in the Turkish army’s artillery corps and is an expert on asymmetric warfare. He was dismissed from the Turkish military in 1996 for his Islamist leanings.

In the report, Israel is described as “the outpost of the new Crusade and a dagger in the heart of Islam,” and “the eyes, ears and fist of the Christian World.”

“If the OIC member states unite and form a joint military force, it will be the largest army in the world,” the newspaper report said. “These countries’ total population is 1,674,526,931. The number of soldiers in active service in these countries is at least 5,206,100. Their [overall] military defense budget, of $174.7 billion, is also worthy of emphasis.”

It continues by contrasting the size of this potential Islamic force with Israel’s military capabilities.

“As for Israel, it is significantly inferior,” the report said. “The population of this country, which attempted to occupy Jerusalem while surrounded by Muslim states, is 8,049,314. Note that the population of Istanbul alone exceeds 14 million. The number of soldiers in active service in the [Israeli] occupation forces is 160,000, and [Israel’s] defense budget is approximately $15.6 billion.

The report suggested the formation of a “Jerusalem Task Group” to take steps to form an Islamic army that would besiege Israel.

“In a possible military operation, the first step is expected to involve 250,000 soldiers, and the establishment of joint land, air and naval bases for use in the short term,” explained the report. It would include the mobilization of 500 tanks and armored vehicles, 100 war planes, 500 attack helicopters and 50 warships and submarines.
Interactive maps provided information on specific bases and operations against Israel.

“Turkey will serve as an important headquarters during the operation, due to its land, air and naval infrastructures,” the report continued. “The Turkish army, which carried out ‘Operation Euphrates Shield’ [in Syria in 2017] with great success, is now ranked the world’s seventh strongest army, and the second largest army among the NATO powers. Turkey has approximately 4,000 tanks and 1,000 war planes and other aircraft. Its navy made significant progress during the last years, with 194 vessels at its disposal.”

The report also noted Pakistan, with its nuclear arsenal, “has important status among the 57 Muslim countries.”
In a statement, Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein described President Donald Trump’s Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as a blow to Muslims, and added: “The Malaysian armed forces are ready to fulfill their duty regarding Jerusalem.”

The newly reconstituted Sanhedrin in Israel, the re-creation of the ancient legal council, is inviting Arabs to prepare for their role in the construction of a Third Temple, as the Bible prophesies.

A letter prepared by rabbis, a copy of which was obtained for Breaking Israel News by Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz, explains “the time has come to rebuild the Temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem in its ancient place.”

The letter from the “biblically mandated court of 71 elders” was in Hebrew, English and Arabic and invites “the Arabs as the sons of Ishmael to take their role in supporting the Third Temple as prophesied by Isaiah.”

Ishmael, in the Bible, is the first son of Abraham, by his wife’s maid, Hagar. Abraham is the patriarch of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Isaac was the second son, and Judaism and Christianity trace roots through him. Islam claims its heritage through Ishmael.

“We, the Jews who advocate building of the Temple, are applying to your Honorable ones, who were nominated by their peoples to give oath, raise vows and gifts to the Temple as prophesied by prophet Isaiah concerning your essential role and honorable position in keeping the Temple and supporting it with lamb sacrifices and incense in order to receive God’s Blessings,” the letter continued.

The invitation: “We are certain that you will choose peaceful means and avoid all paths to hostility and violence. And we are sure that together we shall open doors to love and respect.”

The report said the letter was signed by 23 rabbis who have worked together to re-establish the Sanhedrin.

“The rabbis are in the process of acquiring signatures of the full quorum of 71, after which they will send the letter to major Arab institutions and leaders,” the report said. “They hope to hold a conference with Arabs.”

Rabbi Yehoshua Hollander, a signatory to the letter, told BIN the letter will be a bridge to other nations.

“The Jews are commanded to be a nation of priests,” he said, citing Exodus 19:6: “‘But you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Yisrael.”

Berkowitz explained the move is “intended to bring the entire world one step closer to the global peace that will characterize the Messianic era.”

Hollander said: “The Sanhedrin is inviting them to benefit from this since the Temple is good for the whole world. This universal aspect is essential to what the Temple is; a house for all nations.”

He said for Jews to serve others, “other people need to cooperate.”

The Third Temple movement in Israel has been around for years, with organizations already preparing the utensils that would be required by Old Testament law for the service it would provide.

The movement got a boost late last year when President Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“What he did … was an enormous step in bringing the Temple,” said Asaf Fried, official spokesman for the United Temple Movement, an association of organizations working towards making the Third Temple a reality.

He added, “This necessarily had to come from a non-Jew in order to bring them into the process, so they will be able to take their part in the Temple.”

Fried sees Trump’s role similar to the one played by Cyrus, the Persian king who ended the Babylonian exile and helped build the Second Jewish Temple.

“There have been amazing advances towards bringing the Temple this year. It was clear that Trump was part of that process, guided by Hashem (God),” Fried declared.

Vladimir Putin decisively re-elected as Russian president after 99% of votes counted

Incumbent Russian leader Vladimir Putin has secured a landslide victory in the presidential election with over 99% of the ballots counted.

Vladimir Putin is now leading with 76,6 percent of the vote, well above the simple majority needed to avoid a run-off, Ella Pamfilova, head of the Russian Central Election Commission. Pamfilova announced the preliminary results during a news conference on Monday morning.

With 99.83 percent of the vote counted, first-time Communist Party candidate Pavel Grudinin is running second with 11.9 percent. Heavyweight nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who first ran against Boris Yeltsin in 1991, rounds out the top three with 5.66 percent.

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) has now 10 days to tally the final vote, Pamfilova announced.

None of the other five candidates is on track to receive more than two percent of the vote.

Pamfilova has said that there were no major violations during the vote, and that only “minor and local complaints” were received.

Shortly after the first results were announced, Vladimir Putin addressed his supporters at a massive anniversary rally in Moscow’s Red Square, marking Crimea's reunification with Russia, and talked to reporters in his election campaign HQ. He thanked his backers and answered questions on the hottest political issues.

Putin was first elected to the Kremlin in 2000, and again four years later. Constitutionally barred from serving more than two consecutive terms, he did not run in 2008, the same year presidential terms were extended from four years to six years. Putin won 63.6 percent of the vote in 2012, and, if the early results are confirmed, he will now stay in his post until 2024, the year he turns 72.

The risk of miscalculation between major powers active in Syria has never been higher than today. The situation is critical

The events on Saturday and Sunday, as well as today's speech by General Rudskoy has not been mentioned EVEN ONCE by the regular mass-media in the United States or in Europe. Citizens of the West of blissfully unaware of just how close we are to the physical breakout of World War 3.

It is not surprise that the media is silent; they do the bidding of certain elements of government; the same elements now getting us farther into troubles in places we don't belong.

If the American people started hearing about this on regular mass-media, there would be a public outcry to put a halt to it. The elements within government perpetrating these shenanigans do not want the public to know, in order to prevent that public outcry. They want the eruption of war to be sudden and FRIGHTENING, so citizens will be scared, and will quietly fall-in-line and do what government tells them.

Boris Johnson has raised the bar for UK officials’ barrage of accusations and criticism against Moscow to a new level, by suggesting that Russia hosting the World Cup is like Hitler hosting the Olympics in 1936.

“I think the comparison with 1936 is certainly right. It is an emetic prospect to think of Putin glorifying in this sporting event,” he told the receptive Foreign Affairs Committee. When questioned as to why, in that case, England’s World Cup team has not been pulled from the tournament, the UK foreign minister stated it “would be wrong to punish the team.”

Such an outburst is “unworthy of a head of a European state’s diplomatic service,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said in response, adding that it is “scary” that Johnson is a “representative of a nuclear power.”

In his tirade, the UK foreign secretary pointed the finger unequivocally at Russia over the recent double-agent poisoning, telling the Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC) that the attack on Skripal was a message for Russian defectors: “No one can escape the long arm of Russian revenge.” Johnson has been one of the most fervent Tory MPs in his attacks on Russia, going so far as to accuse Russian President Vladimir Putin of personally ordering the attack.

The foreign secretary went on to tell the committee that the UK Government is not trying to kick off a modern day cold war. “I want to be very clear – we do not wish to engage in a new Cold War… I remember the old Cold War and it was a pretty miserable time,” he said.

“I grew up genuinely worrying that our country was going to be evaporated in a thermonuclear strike. I don’t think we face that kind of existential threat but it is a threat nonetheless and we have to be very tough and very resolute.”

Russia has firmly dismissed all the allegations and urged the UK to provide samples of the nerve agent or some other evidence, instead of simply producing accusations.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Johnson said experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) would take test samples of the substance in question. He accused Russia of creating and storing the ‘Novichok’ nerve agent, claiming that the UK has “evidence… collected over the past 10 years” that Moscow has been developing nerve agents “for the purpose of committing murder.”

Last week, Prime Minister Theresa May confronted Moscow with an ultimatum to reveal the details of the alleged Skripal plot. After her demand was rejected, the UK imposed sanctions on Moscow, which included expelling 23 diplomats, limiting diplomatic ties and freezing Russian state assets in the UK.

In response 23 employees of the British embassy in Moscow have been declared personae non grata.

Speaking last week, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said:“The fact, that they [UK officials] categorically reject to file an official request and deliberately and arrogantly fan anti-Russian rhetoric in the public sphere bordering on hysteria, indicates that they clearly understand they have no formal pretext to go down a legal road."

Donald Trump's national security adviser pick John Bolton on North Korea, Russia and Iran

John Bolton, who has been named by US President Donald Trump as his new national security adviser, has a history of taking hardline positions on foreign policy.

The former UN ambassador will take over from HR McMaster on April 9, with Mr Trump having made the announcement in a tweet.

Mr Bolton has been an active presence on television and on Twitter, and his recent tweets provide some insight on what he will bring to the White House.

Despite Mr Bolton's hawkish stance on North Korea and his advocation for scrapping the Iran nuclear deal, it remains to be seen what his new appointment will mean for the White House.

In an interview with Fox News, he said the personal views he had expressed in the past were "behind me now".

China Is Days Away From Killing the Petrodollar

Not long ago, there was a popular joke in China that went something like, “Who is Xi Jinping?”

The answer was, “The husband of Peng Liyuan,” the famous singer Xi is married to.

Today, Xi is China’s president. He leads 1.4 billion people. And he’ll likely be the most powerful person in the world soon.

As I mentioned last Wednesday, Trump’s new steel and aluminum tariffs are part of a larger, escalating battle between the US and China.

China is rapidly displacing the US as the dominant global power. This shift is inevitable. China’s economy will be twice as large as the US economy by 2030.

This leaves the US with limited options…

1. It could kick back and let China displace it as the most powerful country in the world.

2. It could start a military war with China.

3. And it could push the current trade battle into an all-out economic war against China.

I think a full-blown economic war is the most likely. Under President Trump, it’s all but certain.

That said, the Trump administration seems to underestimate China’s position—in both the short and long term.

For decades, the US has been able to exclude virtually any country it wants from international trade. Right now, if one country wants to trade with another, it basically needs US permission first.

That’s because (for a short while longer) the US dollar is the world’s most important currency. The US Navy also dominates the world’s oceans, controlling most major shipping lanes.

But China is building a new international system. Eventually, it will let China and its trading partners totally bypass the US.

And, as I’ll explain shortly, a key piece is set to fall into place on March 26…

History’s Biggest Infrastructure Project

The New Silk Road is the centerpiece of China’s new plan.

In the coming months and years, it will include high-speed rail lines, modern highways, fiber optic cables, energy pipelines, seaports, and airports. It will link the Atlantic shores of Europe to the Pacific shores of Asia.

China expects to have its New Silk Road fully up and running by 2025.

This is history’s biggest infrastructure project. The whole point is to completely re-draw the world economic map. If it’s successful—and it most likely will be—China will dominate Eurasia.

President Xi announced the $1.4 trillion plan in late 2013. When it’s done, a train leaving Beijing will be able to reach London in only two days.

Keep in mind, the Chinese are careful long-term planners. When they make a strategic decision of this magnitude, they totally commit.

Take their road system, for example. Between 1996 and 2016 China built 2.6 million miles of road, including 70,000 miles of highway. In just 20 years, it built far more highway than the US has in its entire existence.

In other words, the Chinese get things done. They have the political might—along with the financial, technological, and physical resources—to make the New Silk Road happen. With iron-willed President Xi at the helm, I have no doubt they’ll pull it off.

Not long from now, the New Silk Road will help China unseat the US as the world’s dominant global power and totally upend the geopolitical paradigm.

But before that happens—within the next couple of weeks, actually—China is introducing a way for anyone who buys or sells oil to opt out of the US-dominated global monetary system.

Why the Dollar Is Different Than the Peso

Most investors know that oil is the largest and most strategic commodity market in the world. As you can see in the chart below, it dwarfs all other major commodity markets combined.

Every country needs oil. And, for a short while longer, they need US dollars to buy it. That’s a very compelling reason to hold large dollar reserves.

This is the essence of the petrodollar system, which has underpinned the US dollar’s role as the world’s reserve currency since the early 1970s.

Right now, if Italy wants to buy oil from Kuwait, it has to purchase US dollars on the foreign exchange market to pay for the oil first.

This creates a huge artificial market for US dollars.

In part, this is what separates the US dollar from a purely local currency, like the Mexican peso.

The dollar is just a middleman. But it’s used in countless transactions amounting to trillions of dollars that have nothing to do with US products or services.

Since the oil market is so enormous, it acts as a benchmark for international trade. If foreign countries are already using dollars for oil, it’s just easier to use dollars for other international trade, too.

In addition to nearly all oil sales, the US dollar is used for about 80% of all international transactions.

This gives the US unmatched geopolitical leverage. The US can sanction or exclude virtually any country from the US dollar-based financial system at the flip of a switch. By extension, it can also cut off any country from the vast majority of international trade.

The petrodollar system is why people and businesses everywhere in the world take US dollars. Other countries have had little choice about it, until now…

China’s “Golden Alternative”

China does not want to depend on its main adversary like this. It’s the world’s largest oil importer. And it doesn’t want to buy all that oil with US dollars.

That’s why China is introducing a new way to buy oil. For the first time, it will allow for the large-scale exchange of oil for gold.

I’m calling this new mechanism China’s “Golden Alternative” to the petrodollar. It goes live on March 26.

Ultimately, I think people will look back and see the Golden Alternative as the catalyst that killed the petrodollar.

Here’s how it will work…

The Shanghai International Energy Exchange is introducing a crude oil futures contract denominated in Chinese yuan. It will allow oil producers to sell their oil for yuan.

China knows most oil producers don’t want a large reserve of yuan. So producers will be able to efficiently convert it into physical gold through gold exchanges in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

As of March 26, countries around the world will have a genuine, viable way to opt out of the petrodollar system. Now is the time to position yourself to profit.

Gold Will Soar

With China’s Golden Alternative, a lot of oil money will flow into yuan and gold instead of dollars and Treasuries.

I think the price of gold is going to soar.

China imports an average of around 8.5 million barrels of oil per day. This figure is expected to grow at least 10% per year.

Right now, oil is hovering around $60 per barrel. That means China is spending around $510 million per day to import oil.

Gold is currently priced around $1,300 an ounce. That means every day China is importing oil worth over 390,000 ounces of gold.

If we assume that just half of Chinese oil imports will be purchased in gold soon, it translates into increased demand of well over 60 million ounces per year—or more than 55% of gold’s annual production.

Of course, China won’t be the only country using the Golden Alternative. Anyone will be able to.

The increased demand for gold is going to shock the market. That’s why I think the price of gold will soar.

As the petrodollar dies, gold will be remonetized… and China will be another step closer to displacing the US

Death knell tolls for the euro as more European nations repatriate gold – expert to RT

The latest trend among European countries of bringing home their gold reserves has been raising concerns in Brussels. RT talked to Claudio Grass of Precious Metal Advisory Switzerland to understand what’s behind that trend.

According to Grass, the process means disintegration, which usually comes with instability, unrest, more government intervention and control.

“The central banks started the repatriation already a few years ago, meaning before we had Brexit, Catalonia, Trump, AFD or the rising tensions between the Politburo in Brussels and the nations of Eastern Europe,” he said.

Grass explained that these are all symptoms that are evident today and “therefore the central banks might have seen this coming long before the public realized it.”

He said it is fair to say that the world is moving away from a centralized system.

“If we follow this trend, it should be obvious that the next step should be an even bigger break up into smaller units than the nation states. With such geopolitical fragmentation comes also the decentralization of power.”

Analysts have pointed out that EU countries see gold as insurance in case they end up returning to their national currencies. According to Grass, only a fool believes you can create wealth out of nothing, and use that as a basis for a sustainable system.

“Our system is based on 7 percent paper notes and 93 percent digital units backed up by nothing other than central bank promises to pay back the debt in the future through inflation and taxation.”

He explained that in the Western world, the government is forcing people to give up between 35 and 65 percent of their income and to put it into mandatory vehicles such as pension funds, retirement insurance, taxes, and so on.

“If you take away 100 percent of a person’s fruits of labor it is defined as slavery… So there is still some room but it doesn’t look good either.”

Grass added that with the “accelerating disintegration of the Eurozone and more nationalistic and right-wing parties popping up that have a clear policy, that is going against the EU.”

“It is just a matter of time before the Euro, the most artificial currency ever, is going to collapse,” he concluded.

China 'would fight to the end' in trade war with US – Embassy

China would “fight to the end” in a trade war with the US, using “all necessary measures,” according to an embassy statement. The comments come after US President Donald Trump announced $60 billion in new tariffs against China.

In the statement, China’s US Embassy said the country doesn’t want a trade war, but “will not recoil from one” should it come to it. It also accused the US of “ignoring rational voices,” and of disregarding “the mutually-beneficial nature of China-US trade relations and the consensus reached by the two countries of managing differences constructively through consultations.”

"If a trade war were initiated by the US, China would fight to the end to defend its own legitimate interests with all necessary measures,” it added. China strongly opposes what it described as a “typical unilateral trade protectionist action” taken by the Trump administration on Thursday. It said the US action will “directly harm the interests of US consumers, companies, and financial markets.”

The embassy urged the US to “cease and desist, make conscious decisions and avoid placing China-US trade relations in danger,” as it could “end up hurting itself.”

The White House said the Section 301 trade action is aimed at reining in intellectual property theft. In targeting over 100 types of Chinese goods, the US plans to offset what it says is the economic damage caused by intellectual property theft by China. However, the move could spark a trade war, impacting both businesses and consumers.

“I have tremendous respect for President Xi," Trump said, after signing the new measures on Thursday. “We have a great relationship. They’re helping us a lot in North Korea and that’s China. But we have a trade deficit, depending on the way you calculate, of $504 billion.”

"It is the largest deficit of any country in the history of our world. It's out of control," he added. "We're gonna get it taken care of. Frankly it's going to make us a much stronger, much richer nation."

US stocks dropped after Trump’s announcement. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 722 points, almost 3 percent, and the Nasdaq fell 2.4 percent. Shares in US exporters, including Boeing, also dropped, on foot of the feared trade war with China.

Quick Background: Facebook has lost over $60 billion in market value over the last couple of days after it was revealed that an app developed in 2014 which invited users to find out their personality type, specifically designed to "harvest" data of not only the 270,000 people that took the quiz, but of all their Facebook friends as well. When all was said and done, approximately 50 million users had their data harvested.
That data was passed on to Cambridge Analytica in 2014, a privately held company that combines data mining, data brokerage, and data analysis with strategic communication for the electoral process.
The Trump campaign hired Cambridge Analytica in June 2016, who used the information to tailor content to garner support for his candidacy.
Barack Obama was hailed as a genius for implementing this type of targeted content in 2012, to which Hillary Clinton built on in 2016 in order to target her message to specific demographics, as was detailed back in August 2016.

The Hillary Clinton campaign is building on President Obama’s efforts in 2012 to create an edge over Donald Trump by using data mining to influence voters and affect the course of the presidential election.
Data mining can target individuals and tailor political advertisements to show voters what they’ll most likely want to hear about. For example, a woman with children who has voted Republican in the past will most likely have different political interests than a retired man who doesn’t have children and has rarely voted, according to Meta Brown, data analytics consultant.
“Perhaps the mother would hear the candidate’s position on school funding, while the retiree would hear about Medicare,” Brown said.

Standard procedure. Politicians hire firms to analyze data to understand their base, and to develop advertising strategies and content to appeal to more voters. Aanalytic firms like Cambridge Analytica exist in order to obtain information about voters, and analyze the data to target specific demographics with messaging that will appeal to the specific individual.
The fact that the data was harvested using the Facebook platform, shouldn't surprise anyone.
FACEBOOK IS A SURVEILLANCE COMPANY REBRANDED AS SOCIAL MEDIA
Facebook is claiming that the app creator, Dr Aleksandr Kogan, improperly transferred the data to Cambridge Analytica, and that it was against Facebook's rules to share the users' friends data. Facebook is also claiming Cambridge Analytica failed to delete the data when told to do so.
Cambridge Analytica refutes that assertion saying they did delete the data when they were told to.
The app developer says he is being turned into a scapegoat by both Facebook and Cambridge Analystica.
My question is why is anyone surprised at all?
First and foremost, Facebook itself is the one that allows app creators and others to mine users' data, harvesting users' information, as well as Facebook itself using that data to advise advertisers as to the best targeted audiences.
Previously Facebook has been caught manipulating the moods of users as a psychological experiment, treating them like guinea pigs time and time again, with a number of controversial, but legal experiments, as well as censoring conservative opinions, while artificially manipulating news feeds to insert liberal content.
When we see, via Daily Mail, that this latest Facebook scandal has "sown distrust into users who fear their information is not protected," we have to shake our heads in amazement. Have they all been living under a rock?
Independent Media has consistently informed readers that Facebook is nothing more than a data collection site, and how it is the first time in history that users were basically creating their own dossiers because of the amount of information they share with and on the Facebook platform. According to whistleblower Edward Snowden, Facebook is nothing more than a"surveillance company" rebranded as "social media" as he explained on March 17, 2018.

Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as "surveillance companies." Earlier Snowden was more blunt, stating "Facebook makes their money by exploiting and selling intimate details about the private lives of millions, far beyond the scant details you voluntarily post. They are not victims. They are accomplices."
Bingo.
As Facebook stock plummeted, costing investors billions, those investors filed a lawsuit against the social media giant on Tuesday for failing to protect users privacy, saying they suffered massive losses after this most recent revelation.
Facebook execs have been scrambling in an attempt to stem the tide of bad publicity and stock plunges, but the one voice that has been ominously quiet has been Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with hashtag #WheresZuck seeing a lot of activity. Recent reports claim that Zuckerberg is about to break his silence, which will most likely come in the form of a Facebook post if his past behavior is followed. Usually he apologizes, swears to "rebuilt trust," with promises to do better in the future.

SOMETHING MORE SINISTER SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS
The hyperbolic reactions from liberals offended that an analytic firm used user data harvested from Facebook to help Donald Trump when they cheered rather loudly when the same type of data mining was used during the 2012 presidential campaign cycle by Barack Obama, is rather entertaining to watch, but something far more sinister was barely touched on in the midst of the data breach scandal, which indicates that the mainstream media is working to protect Facebook in a variety of ways.
Carol Davidsen, director of data integration and media analytics for Obama for America, claimed on Sunday that Facebook allowed them user data in 2011, saying the social media giant was "on our side."

“They came to office in the days following election recruiting & were very candid that they allowed us to do things they wouldn’t have allowed someone else to do because they were on our side,” Carol Davidsen, director of data integration and media analytics for Obama for America, wrote Sunday on Twitter.
Davidsen said she and her team were able to gather massive amounts of personal information from Facebook users, as well as their friends.
“Facebook was surprised we were able to suck out the whole social graph, but they didn’t stop us once they realized that was what we were doing,” she said on Twitter.

While the hypocrisy of allowing Obama's team open access and doing nothing, to Facebook and the MSM's complete meltdown when the same tactics were used to benefit the "other side," is concerning, it isn't the most sinister bit news that was dropped on Monday.
It appears that a major news outlet, the new York Times, allowed Facebook to force them to remove a negative reference to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, after it was already published.

The Times‘ original story made reference to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg–and mentioned her “consternation” at Stamos’ efforts to shepherd the tech giant towards being more transparent about Russian trolls’ electoral interference. Here’s the original paragraph in question:
Mr. Stamos had been a strong advocate inside the company for investigation and disclosing Russian activity on Facebook, often to the consternation of other top executives, including Sheryl Sandberg, the social network’s chief operating officer, according to the current and former employees, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.

This morning, however, readers noticed the sole reference to Sandberg’s displeasure with Stamos’ transparency efforts–viz. Russia in particular–was wiped clean off the ether. Now, Sandberg’s name and the story’s only reference to her alleged role in frustrating Stamos’ attempts to highlight and root out Russian troll influence on the platform are gone because someone at the New York Times replaced the entire sentence.
Instead of an obvious reference to Facebook COO Sandberg, the New York Times‘ readership will note a vague reference to the fact that Stamos’ anti-Russian transparency efforts were “met with resistance by colleagues.” There’s also no longer any explicit mention that Sandberg was one of those colleagues in the story. In other words, readers will now see nothing to suggest Sandberg had a problem with Stamos’ work related to Russia.
One of the reporters that worked on the original story, Sheera Frenkel, claims that Facebook had nothing to do with the change, while another reporter that worked on the story, Nicole Perloth, contradicts that assertion, saying Facebook's public relations did reach out the NYT, and this type of thing happens "regularly."
This type of influence, being able to force a major publication to edit or delete negative references, concerns anti-trust expert Jeff Hauser, Executive Director of the Revolving Door Project, at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, who told Law & Crime why this is a major concern, stating "[A]t the same time as Facebook and the New York Times compete, Facebook is also an essential platform for the New York Times to reach readers, especially on phones. The New York Times— in fact, all advertising funded media — faces risks every time they report on Facebook in a way that reflects badly on Facebook. No company should be allowed to be as influential as Facebook while holding so much power over the media that a free society relies on to scrutinize powerful institutions. Facebook’s ability to flex its muscles over even the legendary New York Times should scare us about what they can do to smaller outlets contemplating negative coverage of Facebook practices."
BOTTOM LINE
That should concern everyone. While users can delete their Facebook account, refuse to participate and allow them to mine and sell their data, the fact that Facebook or any other powerful entity can and does have the ability to make any major news outlet literally change their reporting (unless is was libelous and/or incorrect), shows us that those outlets are compromised.
While we feel no sympathy for Facebook as it is well documented they treat their users like guinea pigs, literally performing psychological experiments on them, as well as data mining and selling that information to the highest bidder via specifically targeting them for advertisers, it is surprising to see such a fuss kicked up over information that Independent Media has been warning readers about for years.
The bigger scandal, the one that truly needs to be exposed by more than we are seeing, is that Facebook, and other third party entities are able to control the mainstream media.

The Denial of the Right to an Opinion - Britain's Inexorable Slide into Fascism

In Britain, during this last week, something very nasty made its presence known to the nation. And it was not Putin or Russia. It was a coldly executed , psychologically loaded attempt to silence those who wished to express an opinion, other than the one held by the government.
Those who believe that the notion that Vladimir Putin is responsible for the poisoning of a Russian double agent and his daughter in the town of Salisbury, England, is unproven.
The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, stated outright “There is no alternative to the conclusion that Russia was responsible.” This was an order, not a statement of fact. An order to step in line and not court controversy.
It capped months of hysterical anti Russian rhetoric and vilification, which in more ways than one, strongly echoed the George Bush and Tony Blair tirades of 9/11/2001. Tirades deliberately directed to make Saddam Hussein fit the role of the number one villain of that particular moment of time, as the unquestionable holder of non existent 'weapons of mass destruction.' Now Putin is being given the 9/11 treatment. A chilling reminder that this is a repeat of a direct incitement to war.
But those who control the political course of events so as to achieve their sinister goals, know that people forget. So Theresa May no doubt feels quite secure in proclaiming Putin to be the new Mr Evil, and the undoubted purveyor of this particular version of a weapon of mass destruction.
Quite secure in inciting arguments that the Country should be prepared to go to war with this 'Russian monster', all because some obscure Soviet double agent had been poisoned with a nasty organophosphate product on British soil.
And yet, ironically, and in direct contrast to buffoon politicians like Theresa May and Boris Johnson, Vladimir Putin has emerged over the past decade, as the leading statesman on the world stage. A thoughtful, cool head and a genuine diplomat.
But the lather of House of Commons 'rent a crowd' fury directed against the Russian President, carried with it a warning that the Russian media outlet 'Russian Today' (RT) might be closed down in Britain, because it dared to ask questions that the British media dared not ask.
God forbid that anyone should raise their voice in suggesting that this might be a rather over-the-top response to an offense not untypical of things that go on in the obscure and shadowy world of secret agents. But someone did – and that someone happened to be the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbin, who stood up in the House of Commons and challenged the Prime minister's opinion on the unsubstantiated facts behind this crime, and the premature pinning of the blame for it on the Russian President.
This entirely sensible challenge drew a howl of dissent from government MP's and even some members of Corbin's own opposition party. No, this was, after all, 'appeasement' and only the weak and stupid would consider offering any form of olive branch to Mr Evil.
If all this had been part of some TV drama series one could at least have turned off the set. But it wasn't. It isn't. And that makes it a blood chilling experience for anyone hoping for some form of rational, measured discussion, to put matters in their proper perspective.
No such human qualities were on display in this witches cauldron of vitriolic accusation and barely hidden call for blood. The British Houses of Parliament.
It sends a shiver down the spine of all sentient human beings when they realize that what is on show is nothing more or nothing less - than the denial of the right to an opinion. That any mortal who dares to ask a logical question is shouted down and accused of working for the devil.
For that was the sentiment of this occasion. And it amply illustrates the pervasive, creeping rise of the fascistic state; everyday more strident, more dictatorial, more authoritarian. An ever more threatening sword held over citizens who have not fallen. Who have refused to be slaves. An ever more sinister clamoring and broadcasting of the vitriol of war.
Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are they key components of a democratic constitution. We have seen them both being methodically eaten into – drip, drip, drip, during the last two decades. We are so close to the full scale return of the doctrinaire, totalitarian dictatorship which many once believed had been buried for good under the rubble of two World wars.
But no, not buried at all. It was the German Nobel Prize winning author Thomas Mann, who recalled in the early 1950's, that what he feared for in the post Hitler era, was “The weak position of Freedom”. His fears have proved ominously correct.
Post World War Two societies in both Europe and America, have failed to recognize and deal with the symptoms of this disease, as it etched its way back into the corridors of power. Until once again exerting a critical influence on daily life.
We should know more about this beast by now. We have failed to absorb the lessons of history. We have witnessed the corrosion of decades of hard won civil liberties in just a handful of years.
We are monitored, surveyed and spied upon via gadgets of the electronic era which most have welcomed with open arms, as the symbol of the age of 'freedom of communication'.
We have allowed our countries to go to war and destroy other nations on the slimmest – or non existent – fabricated evidence of their 'threat' to our nation states.
We have turned our backs one hundred times, on the lies, corruption and criminality of our corporate and government leaders. We have been reduced to spineless, politically correct observers, as our nation's children are ritually abused and sacrificed to the perverted instincts of the political elite. And so much more. So much more.
It is as if all the demons of hell suddenly found a perfect venue to express their treachery. In and amongst the fables halls of Westminster. And others will surely point-out the same symptoms manifesting in their various countries of origin.
For this is not just a national crises, it is a global pandemic. It must be addressed and dealt with wherever it shows its hideous face. There is no excuse for failing in this task. We have no choice. There can be no excuse for slipping into the pacifistic role of the victim when faced by acts of very real evil.
We cannot turn away from our own souls. We did not come to this planet to hide from the truth.

A new report says that PE lessons in school are racist because they favour 'privileged' white children over ethnic minority ones (FILE photo)

Its authors, who were given a grant of nearly £10,000 to examine PE classes in England and Norway, suggest that learning dances from different cultures should be given greater prominence.

They add that the emphasis in PE on health and fitness could even be imposing Western ideals of how people’s bodies should look.

They also claim that ‘character-building’ practises such as ‘fair play’ have European roots.

But last night former England football star Les Ferdinand, a black player who is now director of football at Queens Park Rangers, derided the study as ‘ridiculous’.

He said he had never been aware of racism during his ten years of school PE and added: ‘Ethnic minorities have gone on to play football and rugby for England and they have all gone through the same PE curriculum.

‘This research is a waste of money and a waste of time. It is ludicrous.’

Lord Ouseley, who chairs the anti-racism football campaign Kick It Out, said it was ‘crazy’ to put such sports in ‘a context of ethnicity and racism’ as they were played all over the world.

He added: ‘This research is an irrelevance and also patronising because people make their own decisions about their involvement in sport.’

The report – called A Whitewashed Curriculum? The Construction of Race in Contemporary PE Curriculum Policy – says traditional games were developed in the Victorian era by ‘white privileged males’ at elite public schools that often discriminated against minorities.

The study, written in often baffling jargon and published in the journal Sport, Education and Society, says the games have been used by the British as ‘part of a civilising process’ and transported around the world ‘as an extension of nationalism and the Empire’.

The authors say they can trace ‘the legacies of colonialism and Eurocentric ways of reasoning’ in PE curriculums, particularly with regard to team games and ‘character-building’ practices such as ‘fair play’. They add that PE classes are ‘whitewashed’ because they are based on values that had predominantly white historical roots. ‘Certain white people and their practices are privileged and valued,’ they say.

The study was conducted by Anne Flintoff, Professor of Physical Education and Sport at Leeds Beckett University, and Fiona Dowling from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo. They received a grant of £9,940 from the largely taxpayer-funded British Academy to support their work.

The authors claim that English educationalists prefer to ‘pander to the feelings and fears of white people rather than aim to eradicate racism’. They also criticise the PE curriculum for portraying ‘traditional’ sports – rugby, cricket, football, tennis, hockey, netball and rounders – as the ideal ‘bearers of culture’ and as representing the ‘best that has been thought and said’. Bizarrely, they say that by focusing on the need for ‘healthy, active lives’ there is ‘a danger PE lessons can contribute to a recolonisation of ethnic minorities’ physicality’.

Quoting from other research, they say: ‘It is through the monocultural and ahistorical language of discourses of fatness and fitness in schools that young people’s bodies, in subtle ways, are pedagogized to white ideals of the body.’

The report also states that PE is ‘constructed as a predominantly white, unmarked space’.
