ARE BIBLE'S 'END TIMES' IN TODAY'S HEADLINES?
'I see America imploding, Middle East on fire and church in state of apostasy'

It doesn't take long for those with an interest in Bible prophecy to begin drawing comparisons to the study of what the Bible calls the "end times" to today's news headlines.
To them the book of Matthew, Chapter 24, reads like the front page of the New York Times.
Jesus' disciples asked him in Matthew 24 for a sign of the "end of the world." He answered their question with a series of events to watch for, and so began the job of those who would watch for these things to take place.
One such person is Jan Markell, who runs Minnesota's Olive Tree Ministries. Markell, a Messianic Jewish believer, is an accomplished author and speaker, and hosts a radio program syndicated on 551 Christian radio stations, called "Understanding the Times Radio."
Several years ago, she also began hosting an annual conference called "Understanding the Times," which she holds in a large, suburban Minneapolis church, to larger and larger crowds every year.
"When I look at the headlines, I see America imploding, the Middle East on fire and I see the church in a state of apostasy," the founder of Olive Tree Ministries told WND.
Those subjects will be the focus of the upcoming "Understanding the Times 2012 Conference," to be held in the suburbs of Minneapolis on Oct. 5 and 6.
The ministry brings in speakers to give context to end-times eschatology, or the study of the end times, from a Biblical perspective, and this year the conference promises to bring in large crowds of people eager to understand what is happening in the world, and specifically in America.
"We try to look at the issues in the church, geopolitical issues, everything from a biblical perspective," Markell told WND. "Everywhere people are looking for stability. The Bible says God is the stability of our times.
"Our effort is to get people to focus on the stability of God in times that are completely unstable."
This year the conference may draw an even larger crowd, as one of the main speakers is Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, author of "The Harbinger."
"The Harbinger" rose to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list, and hasn't retreated since it was published in January. Right on its heels came the video, "The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment, which quickly became the No. 1 faith film in the country.
Cahn, pastor of the Jerusalem Center-Beth Israel Congregation in Wayne, N.J., says America is uncannily re-enacting ancient Israel's behavior prior to its judgment and eventual fall. He found a sympathetic ear for his message in WND founder Joseph Farah, who produced "The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment" as a followup to "The Harbinger."
"If you believe in the Bible as the word of God, there's no question in my mind you will be touched and moved by this presentation," Farah says about "The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment."
"This teaching has literally changed my life - given me new purpose and commitment and passion."
Likewise, Markell told WND that Cahn has "tapped into something that urgently is needed by the people."
She said while there are factions in America today laughing at the idea of repentance - a main thrust of "the Harbinger" - that's exactly the message in the Bible.
Both the book and the movie show the uncanny parallels between events prior to the dispersion of Israel and events taking place in the U.S. today. In fact, the events continue to unfold even after the release of the book and movie.
"In addition to sharing the message of 'The Harbinger' at the 'Understanding the Times Conference,' I will share a number of things that have recently happened in America. The signs are still happening," Cahn told WND.
The events Cahn speaks of have all taken place since Sept. 11, 2001, and they all connect to Isaiah 9:10.
"The ancient vow begins with these words: 'The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with hewn stone,'" explains Cahn. "The vow declares Israel's defiance of God, in the face of a devastating strike on the land. The hewn stone, which begins the rebuilding, symbolizes the nation's intention to come back stronger than before.
"The book then reveals the parallel to proclamations by Barack Obama in his first State of the Union message, then Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle the day after 9/11 to a joint session of Congress and former senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards on the third anniversary of 9/11."
Cahn told WND that since the Harbinger was released, "What's in it is still coming to pass.
"People are stunned when they see these things in the news," he said.
When asked what the final outcome of the Isaiah prophecy meant for Israel, and now in the view of many who see the parallels to modern America, Cahn told WND, "God's judgment."
"The end of the progression in the Biblical template is national judgment, and the fact that the signs are continuing, mean that America has not turned back to God," he said.
Cahn also wants people to know that "judgment is ultimately about hope."
"If there were no hope, there would be no reason for God to give us signs. There would be no point in warning us, if we weren't able to seek forgiveness," he said.
Despite those naysayers who doubt his vision and perception, Cahn says the message is this, "II Chronicles 7:14 says, 'If My people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.'

Daystar, TBN ready for Messiah in Jerusalem
The Christian TV broadcasters both have their offices set up on a holy city hill, poised for Jesus, and are spreading the gospel to Jews in Israel.

JERUSALEM -- If the Messiah descends from the Mount of Olives as foretold in the Bible, America's two biggest Christian broadcasters are well-positioned to cover it live thanks to recent acquisitions of adjacent Jerusalem studios on a hill overlooking the Old City.
Texas-based Daystar Television Network already beams a 24-hour-a-day live webcam from its terrace. Not to be outdone, Costa Mesa-based Trinity Broadcasting Network last month bought the building next door.
The dueling studios are part of an aggressive push by U.S. evangelical broadcasters seeking to gain a stronger foothold in the holy city. Their presence not only offers boasting rights with American viewers and contributors, but also -- and more controversially -- a platform for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to Jews in Israel.
In addition to its new multistory building, TBN is negotiating with Israel's Yes satellite television provider to secure a full-time home for its evangelical Shalom TV channel.
Daystar already airs its English-language programming in Israel with dedicated channels on both Yes and cable provider HOT Telecommunications Systems, claiming to be the first Christian evangelical broadcaster to transmit a gospel message to Israeli television sets 24 hours a day.
"The main thing we want to do is help sponsor what we call Messianic Jews, or Jews that have received Jesus Christ as their Messiah," said TBN co-founder Paul Crouch, who recently wrapped up a tour of Israel with 1,800 TBN supporters, most of them from America. "We want to do some Hebrew language programs to reach out to Jews and entice them to read the word of God and become what we call a completed Jew."
Such proselytizing angers Orthodox Jewish groups who say it threatens the character of a nation that was created as a home for Jewish refugees of the Holocaust. Christian proselytizing is legal in Israel, though the government has at times restricted and discouraged the practice; members of the Jewish faith do not seek to convert those of other faiths.
"One of the things I find offensive is that they are bragging about their missionary work," said Ellen Horowitz, research director at Jewish Israel, a grass-roots group created in 2008 to track and counteract Christian missionaries in Israel. "They're actually very in-your-face about it."
Horowitz said proselytizing is a touchy subject in Israel. "Our people have been through the wringer already with either persecution or assimilation," she said. "Now people finally get to a Jewish nation and someone pushes a copy of the New Testament in Hebrew at them. A sensitive line is being crossed."
When Daystar debuted in Israel in 2006, it created such a public uproar that the channel was temporarily suspended from the HOT network. It was restored after a court challenge.
Since then, Christian evangelical groups have quietly and steadily expanded their footprint in Jerusalem.
Last spring, evangelist organizer Mike Evans began soliciting donations from U.S. supporters for his $10-million purchase of a prime commercial building in Jerusalem's city center, where he plans to open a facility devoted to Christian evangelism.
In July, American missionary Rick Ridings, a nephew of Paul Crouch who operates a walk-in prayer center near Mt. Zion, hosted several hundred Israeli youths at a three-day gospel music and prayer festival in Tel Aviv.
Crouch said TBN, whose recently purchased building houses the Los Angeles Times Jerusalem bureau, is striving to promote Christianity in Israel, where the faith is sometimes overshadowed by the struggle between Judaism and Islam. Trinity Broadcasting already is one of the world's largest religious broadcasters, with 18 networks in seven languages.
"Christianity is not represented in Israel as well as it could," he said. "We hope to equalize that and give Christianity a better platform."
The latest inroads by evangelical Christians have not triggered the backlash that occurred in 2006 when Daystar went on the air. In fact, Crouch said TBN's biggest obstacle in Jerusalem so far is rival Daystar, which he said tried to block TBN's Shalom Channel from airing on Yes satellite.
"They raised a stink," Crouch said. "I guess some of our Christian brothers don't want the competition."
A Yes spokeswoman said negotiations with TBN are ongoing and a final deal has not been reached. Daystar officials declined to comment, but said in a statement that the company "loves and appreciates Israel."
Some Israelis are welcoming members of the American evangelical community as strategic partners, both politically and economically.
In addition to becoming the fastest-growing segment of Israel's tourism market, U.S. evangelicals tend to be staunchly pro-Israel, lobbying in Washington on the Israeli government's behalf on such matters as the Palestinian conflict or West Bank settlement construction.
Christian broadcasters have donated tens of millions of dollars in recent years to build Israeli schools, community centers, hospital wards and even synagogues. Part of the support is based upon their belief that the return of the Jewish people to Israel will usher in the second coming of Jesus.
Christian groups have forged close ties with Russian-born lawmakers in the parliament, or Knesset, and recently helped push through a law that extended property tax exemptions once available only to Jewish religious institutions to those owned by Christian congregations.
"They are much more sophisticated and calculated than they were before," Horowitz said. "With all the millions of dollars they are giving, it's harder for the government to say no."
Her group said the number of evangelical Christian congregations in Israel has grown to 150 with as many as 20,000 followers, up from an estimated 3,000 in 1987, based on estimates from the congregations.
Christian broadcasters boast to their viewers that they are seeing a record number of Jews convert to Christianity. "The harvest is coming in so fast," Crouch said.
Much of the growth is coming from the 1 million Russian immigrants who arrived in Israel during the 1990s. Many of the immigrants were never considered Jewish by Orthodox rabbis or had practiced Christianity in Russia.
"They see Russians as a way to get a foothold in Israel and create a Christian revival here," Horowitz said. "We don't have anything against Christians. But the Jewish people have to watch their backside to make sure this evangelical embrace does not become a hold that we can't get out of."

Iran will defeat an enemy "conspiracy" against its foreign currency and gold markets, an adviser to the country's supreme leader said on Friday, following violent protests that closed Tehran's grand bazaar.
Riot police clashed with protesters and arrested money changers on Wednesday during demonstrations triggered by the collapse of the rial, which has lost around a third of its value against the dollar in a week.
Protesters called President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a traitor because of what many say is his serious mismanagement of the economy, which has been hit by western sanctions imposed over Iran's nuclear programme.
But there has so far been no public criticism of the country's most powerful authority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"Iran is overcoming the psychological war and conspiracy that the enemy has brought to the currency and gold market and this war is constantly fluctuating," Gholam Ali Haddad Adel, an adviser, was quoted by the semi-official Fars news agency as saying.
"The arrogant powers, in their crude way, think that the nation of Iran is ready to let go of the Islamic revolution through economic pressure but we are establishing Iran's economic strength."
Haddad Adel is an ally of Khamenei and father-in-law to his second son, Mojtaba.
Most of the bazaar remained shut on Thursday with police patrolling the area. Business associations said it would reopen on Saturday with security forces present. It is traditionally closed on Fridays.
The bazaar, whose merchants were influential in bringing an end to Iran's monarchy in 1979, wields significant influence and the unrest shows that the economic hardship already faced by many Iranians is also being felt by merchants.

On Oct. 4th, the German state TV channel ZDF reported on the attack on Turkey several times.
In its “Mittagsmagazin” at 1300 hours it reports as follows:

The first victim of war is the truth
The first report clearly states that the rebels officially claimed responsibility for the attack on Turkey.
It is telling to see how the pressure on this TV station worked. They had to back-paddle:
At 1300 it was the Syrian Rebels officially claiming responsibility.
In the main evening news at 1900 it was the Syrians (suggesting the Syrian army). This is a prime example of how the first and probably most authentic and truthful report is turned and twisted by the spin doctors to come to the desired result. In these times of Orwellian double speak we have to give credit to the ZDF that they did not stick with “The Syrians did it” but at least ended with a question mark - in the late evening they leave it open who was responsible.

Butler stole papers pope wanted destroyed - police

(Reuters) - Pope Benedict's former butler stole highly sensitive papers the pontiff had marked "to be destroyed" and compromised Vatican security through his actions, the Holy See's police told his trial on Wednesday.
On the third day of Paolo Gabriele's trial, testimony depicted a man fascinated by the occult, Masonic lodges, secret services and past Italian and Vatican scandals.
"You can understand our unease when we saw these documents. This was a total violation of the privacy of the papal family," said police agent Stefano De Santis, one of the four agents who said they found the papers in Gabriele's home, using a Vatican term for the pope's closest aides.
Gabriele's leak to an Italian journalist of sensitive documents, some of them alleging corruption in the Vatican, caused one of the biggest crises of Pope Benedict's papacy.
It threw an unflattering spotlight on the inner workings of a city-state eager to shake off a series of scandals involving sexual abuse of minors by clerics around the world and mismanagement at its bank.
Gabriele, a trusted servant who served the pope meals, helped him dress and rode in the popemobile, has admitted passing papers to the journalist at secret meetings, but told the court at a previous hearing he did not see this as a crime.
The former butler sat impassively and occasionally smiled during Wednesday's 75-minute session as Vatican policemen told the court how they searched his apartment in the Vatican on May 23, the night of his arrest, and what they found.
The mass of incriminating documents, most of which were hidden in huge piles of papers stashed in a large wardrobe, included personal letters between the pope, cardinals and politicians on a variety of subjects.
Some papers, De Santis said, bore the pope's handwriting and had been marked "to be destroyed" by the pontiff in German. He did not say what those papers concerned.
Some of the documents were copies of encrypted documents. "One photocopy was enough to threaten the operations of the Holy See," De Santis told the court, without elaborating.
The agents said they found a mass of documents and books filled with newspaper clippings on the occult, secret services, Masonic lodges, yoga, political scandals in Italy, scandals involving the Vatican bank and other subjects.
"SPLIT PERSONALITY"
Defence lawyer Cristiana Arru sought to turn the spotlight on police methods during the search, drawing out several agents to say that they had not used gloves when they handled the documents, and a gold nugget and a cheque for 100,000 euros made out to the pope which were also found.
Police said Gabriele, once one of fewer than 10 people who had the key to an elevator leading to the private papal apartment, had printed instructions on how to hide files in computers and how to use cellphones secretly.
Bishop Francesco Cavina, who knew Gabriele in the Vatican, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Wednesday that the butler, a father-of-three, may have a "disturbed mind" and "a split personality".
Two of the four policemen who testified on Wednesday also rejected Gabriele's accusations, made on Tuesday, that he was mistreated for several weeks after his arrest.
Gabriele told the court's previous hearing that for up to 20 days he was held in a room so small he could not stretch out his arms and that the light was left on 24 hours a day, causing him eye damage.
A Vatican judge ordered an investigation into the allegations.
De Santis said the search turned up "many more" papers than appeared in a book by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, who wrote a muckraking expose early in 2012.
The letters to the pope included one in which a senior Vatican functionary expressed concern about corruption in the Holy See's business dealings with Italian companies.
The letter-writer, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, was posted to Washington after raising the issue, despite begging to be allowed to stay at the papal state.
The trial adjourned until Saturday, when a verdict is expected.

The $1 billion mission to reach the Earth's mantle

(CNN) -- Humans have reached the moon and are planning to return samples from Mars, but when it comes to exploring the land deep beneath our feet, we have only scratched the surface of our planet.
This may be about to change with a $1 billion mission to drill 6 km (3.7 miles) beneath the seafloor to reach the Earth's mantle -- a 3000 km-thick layer of slowly deforming rock between the crust and the core which makes up the majority of our planet -- and bring back the first ever fresh samples.
It could help answer some of our biggest questions about the origins and evolution of Earth itself, with almost all of the sea floor and continents that make up the Earth´s surface originating from the mantle.
Geologists involved in the project are already comparing it to the Apollo Moon missions in terms of the value of the samples it could yield.
However, in order to reach those samples, the team of international scientists must first find a way to grind their way through ultra-hard rocks with 10 km-long (6.2 miles) drill pipes -- a technical challenge that one of the project co-leaders Damon Teagle, from the UK's University of Southampton calls, "the most challenging endeavor in the history of Earth science."
Their task will be all the more difficult for being conducted out in the middle of the ocean. It is here that the Earth´s crust is at its thinnest at around 6 km compared to as much as 60 km (37.3 miles) on land.
They have already identified three possible locations -- all in the Pacific Ocean -- where the ocean floor was formed at relatively fast spreading mid-ocean ridges, says Teagle.
The hole they will drill will be just 30 cm in width all the way from the ocean floor to inside the mantle -- a monumental engineering feat.
"It will be the equivalent of dangling a steel string the width of a human hair in the deep end of a swimming pool and inserting it into a thimble 1/10 mm wide on the bottom, and then drilling a few meters into the foundations," says Teagle.
To get to the mantle scientists will be relying on a purpose-built Japanese deep-sea drilling vessel called Chikyu, first launched in 2002 and capable of carrying 10 km of drilling pipes. It has already set a world-record for the deepest hole in scientific ocean drilling history, reaching 2.2 km into the seafloor.
What makes the task even more difficult is that, currently, the drill bits have a limited lifespan of between 50-60 hours before needing to be replaced, meaning drilling could take many years unless technology improves.
The first attempts to reach the Earth's mantle actually began back in the early 1960s. Dubbed "Project Mohole" after the Croatian meteorologist Andrija Mohorovicic who first discovered the boundary between the Earth's crust and mantle, a team of U.S. scientists managed to drill a few meters into the oceanic crust off Guadalupe Island in the eastern pacific. The achievement was recognized by a telegram from President John F. Kennedy but the project was closed down in 1966.
Since then, a Russian-project in the far north Kola Peninsula during the 1980s has taken over the record for the deepest borehole ever drilled, reaching 12 km into the earth's crust.
And In 2011, the oil giant Exxon Mobil recorded an even longer borehole at just over 12 km in eastern Russia. However, it wasn't drilled vertically downwards and only reached soft sedimentary rocks.
While neither of these record-drilling projects got close to the Earth's mantle, they did give the geologists leading the new project -- The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) -- confidence that recent advances in drilling techniques have made their plans more feasible than ever before.
"Many of the technologies required are conventional deep-drilling technologies that are presently being used in the oil and gas industry," explain IODP geologists.
However, given the challenges and the likely cost of $1 billion plus, much of which still needs to be raised, skeptics may question the necessity of the mission.
For Teagle, reaching the Earth's mantle would provide a "legacy of fundamental scientific knowledge" and "inspire" future generations.
"I was giving a lecture to a group of 15-year-old high-school students recently and they [and their teachers] were fascinated by the technology and the thought that we could re-enter a hole just a few centimeters across with a drill string dangled from a ship in the open ocean 4 km above."
As well as the technical achievement of bringing back samples, the samples themselves will clarify many of the assumptions we have about how our planet works. Despite making up 68% of the Earth´s mass, Teagle says we only have a "reasonable" idea of what the mantle is made of and how it works.
"[The mantle] is the engine that drives how our planet works and why we have earthquakes and volcanoes and continents. We have the textbook cartoons but detailed knowledge is lacking," he says.
The Japanese government has already invested substantially in the project through the construction of Chikyu, with some scientists regarding the mission as the country's "moon project."

Environmental modification techniques (ENMOD) for military use constitute, in the present context of global warfare, the ultimate weapon of mass destruction.
Rarely acknowledged in the debate on global climate change, the world's weather can now be modified as part of a new generation of sophisticated electromagnetic weapons. Both the US and Russia have developed capabilities to manipulate the climate for military use.
Environmental modification techniques have been applied by the US military for more than half a century. US mathematician John von Neumann, in liaison with the US Department of Defense, started his research on weather modification in the late 1940s at the height of the Cold War and foresaw 'forms of climatic warfare as yet unimagined'. During the Vietnam war, cloud-seeding techniques were used, starting in 1967 under Project Popeye, the objective of which was to prolong the monsoon season and block enemy supply routes along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
The US military has developed advanced capabilities that enable it selectively to alter weather patterns. The technology, which is being perfected under the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), is an appendage of the Strategic Defense Initiative - 'Star Wars'. From a military standpoint, HAARP is a weapon of mass destruction, operating from the outer atmosphere and capable of destabilising agricultural and ecological systems around the world.
Weather-modification, according to the US Air Force document AF 2025 Final Report,
"offers the war fighter a wide range of possible options to defeat or coerce an adversary', capabilities, it says, extend to the triggering of floods, hurricanes, droughts and earthquakes: 'Weather modification will become a part of domestic and international security and could be done unilaterally... It could have offensive and defensive applications and even be used for deterrence purposes. The ability to generate precipitation, fog and storms on earth or to modify space weather... and the production of artificial weather all are a part of an integrated set of [military] technologies."
In 1977, an international Convention was ratified by the UN General Assembly which banned 'military or other hostile use of environmental modification techniques having widespread, long-lasting or severe effects.' It defined 'environmental modification techniques' as 'any technique for changing - through the deliberate manipulation of natural processes - the dynamics, composition or structure of the earth, including its biota, lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, or of outer space.'

The term "environmental modification techniques" refers to any technique for changing - through the deliberate manipulation of natural processes - the dynamics, composition or structure of the Earth, including its biota, lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, or of outer space. While the substance of the 1977 Convention was reasserted in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) signed at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, debate on weather modification for military use has become a scientific taboo.
Military analysts and scientists are mute on the subject. Meteorologists are not investigating the matter and environmentalists are focused on greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. Neither is the possibility of climatic or environmental manipulations as part of a military and intelligence agenda, while tacitly acknowledged, part of the broader debate on climate change under UN auspices.
While discussion of the post Cold War military applications of weather warfare is a taboo, the US Air Force has nonetheless acknowledged the strategic importance of ENMOD techniques in the modern battlefield of non-conventional warfare and intel ops, including the conduct, without the enemy's knowledge, of "covert" weather modification operations.
At this juncture in our history, US-NATO forces are deployed worldwide.
The US and its allies are not only targeting Syria, Iran and North Korea, they are also threatening Russia and China.
The Pentagon has formulated the contours of a global military agenda, a "long war", a war without borders.
"Weather warfare" is the ultimate WMD with the potential of destabilizing an enemy's ecosystem, destroying its agriculture, disabling communications networks. In other words, ENMOD techniques can undermine an entire national economy, impoverish millions of people and "kill a nation" without the deployment of troops and military hardware.

France is positioned to ban the words "mother" and "father" from legal documents under the country's plan to legalize homosexual "marriage" and give equal adoption rights to both traditional couples and same-sex partners. Under the proposal, which is being aggressively pushed forward by, among others, French president Francois Hollande, the term "parents" would replace "mother" and "father" in an identical marriage ceremony that will be used for both traditional and homosexual weddings.
According to the UK's Christian Institute, a draft law set to be presented to Hollande's cabinet for approval in October will define marriage as the "union of two people, of different or the same gender."
France's Catholic Church has been vocal in its opposition to homosexual "marriage," with Cardinal Philippe Barbarin warning of the dire consequences that would result. "Gay marriage would herald a complete breakdown in society," Barbarin told Radio Free Christianity. "This could have innumerable consequences. Afterward they will want to create couples with three or four members. And after that, perhaps one day the taboo of incest will fall."
The country's Catholic Church has published a prayer that includes the admonition: "Children should not be subjected to adults' desires and conflicts, so they can fully benefit from the love of their mother and father."
In addition, Pope Benedict called 30 French bishops to Italy to encourage them in the Catholic Church's fight to protect marriage, telling the prelates, "We have there a true challenge to take on."
Representing the views of those wishing to force same-sex "marriage" on the country, France's Justice Minister Christiane Taubira challenged: "Who is to say that a heterosexual couple will bring a child up better than a homosexual couple, that they will guarantee the best conditions for the child's development?" Taubira claimed that "what is certain is that the interest of the child is a major preoccupation for the government."
French bishop Dominique Rey has called for the government to allow the people of France to decide on the country's definition of marriage. "A referendum must be held to allow a real debate and to make sure the government is not in the grip of the lobbies," he said. "A majority of the population agrees with the traditional view of marriage."

California has become the first state in the nation to ban therapy that tries to turn gay teens straight.
Gov. Jerry Brown announced Sunday that he has signed Senate Bill 1172, which prohibits children under age 18 from undergoing "sexual orientation change efforts." The law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, prohibits state-licensed therapists from engaging in these practices with minors.
"Governor Brown today reaffirmed what medical and mental health organizations have made clear: Efforts to change minors' sexual orientation are not therapy, they are the relics of prejudice and abuse that have inflicted untold harm on young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians," Clarissa Filgioun, board president of Equality California, said in a press release.
Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, added: "Governor Brown has sent a powerful message of affirmation and support to LGBT youth and their families. This law will ensure that state-licensed therapists can no longer abuse their power to harm LGBT youth and propagate the dangerous and deadly lie that sexual orientation is an illness or disorder that can be 'cured.'"
The bill was sponsored by Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, who said bogus and unethical practices by mental-health providers to try to change a young person's sexual orientation have resulted in irreparable psychological and emotional harm to patients.
"I am deeply honored Governor Brown signed SB 1172. The bill is necessary because children were being psychologically abused by reparative therapists who would try to change the child's sexual orientation. An entire house of medicine has rejected gay conversion therapy. Not only does it not work but it is harmful. Patients who go through this have gone through guilt and shame, and some have committed suicide," Lieu told NBS News in a telephone interview on Sunday.
Lieu called "gay cure" therapy "quackery" and said parents were never informed of its potentially dangerous aftereffects.

Psychiatric Patients Euthanized in the Netherlands

Rick Santorum got into trouble a few months ago for making some pointed criticisms of euthanasia in the Netherlands. As I pointed out at the time, his details were somewhat off, but the substance of his critique was spot on. Simply stated, euthanasia has taken Dutch medical ethics off a vertical moral cliff, to the point that psychiatric patients are sometimes terminated by their doctors or psychiatrists.
Latest example: According to Dutch media, thirteen psychiatric patients were assisted in suicide last year. From the DutchNews story:
A total of 13 psychiatric patients were helped to end their life last year, compared with just two in 2010, according to new figures from the regional euthanasia monitoring groups. Euthanasia among people in the early stages of dementia also rose last year to 49 cases, double that of 2010. The figures are in line with a general upward trend. The total number of euthanasia cases rose 18% last year to 3,695 and the number of cases has doubled since 2006, the report said.
Don't expect the media to care. When they reference Dutch euthanasia, readers/viewers are always assured that medicalized killing is tightly controlled under "strict conditions," as the story quoted above does - even as it cites the euthanasias of psychiatric and dementia patients!
Belgium has also legalized euthanasia, and a medical journal reported one psychiatric patient (as well as several disabled patients) euthanized and then subjected to consensual organ harvesting. The Swiss allow suicide clinics and its Supreme Court established a right to assisted suicide for the mentally ill.
Here's the moral of the story: Once a society agrees that some suicides are good, the categories of the killable never stops expanding.

Digital Age overload: 'Internet addiction' to be classified as mental illness

Think twice the next time you play a videogame or surf the Net: 'Internet-use disorder' is set to be added to the list of mental illnesses in the worldwide psychiatric manual. Kids are identified as being especially at risk.
The international mental health encyclopedia known as the 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' (DSM-IV) will include Internet-use disorder as a condition "recommended for further study" in its forthcoming May 2013 edition.
Psychologists believe that Internet addiction should be categorized like other addiction disorders as it has similar symptoms, including emotional shutdown, lack of concentration and withdrawal.
Parents have noted their children becoming angry and violent when their electronic gadgets are taken away from them, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. In other instances, kids preferred to play a videogame over eating or social interaction.
One step closer to mental illness
The listing is another step towards classifying Internet addiction as a mental illness: The DSM-IV's new inclusion demonstrates that there are risks posed by overusing technology and that more research is required, which could lead to formal diagnoses of the disorder in the future.
Psychologists are pushing to broaden the diagnoses of Internet-use disorder to include more than just gaming addictions, which could expand the age group of those affected by the illness.
''With kids, gaming is an obvious issue. But overall, technology use could be a potential problem,'' Director of the Brain and Psychological Sciences Research Centre Mike Kyrios told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Australia was one of the first countries to recognize the problem and offer public treatment, and established clinics to treat video game addiction.
That such widely used technologies can cause deep harm to children has lead to further examinations of adults habits surrounding devices used 24/7 for reading, gaming, and social interactions.
When addiction borders on insanity
Addiction to online games is not a new phenomenon, with some cases grabbing international headlines over the past few years.
In a 2009 incident, 17-year-old Daniel Petric of Ohio shot his mother and injured his father after they confiscated his Halo 3 videogame because they feared he was playing it too much.
Chris Staniforth, 20, suffered a blockage to his lungs and died while playing his Xbox for up to 12 hours in 2011.
A year later, another gaming addict died after playing an online videogame for 40 hours straight at an Internet café in Taiwan.
Similar behavior has also been exhibited by adults: A Korean couple was arrested in 2010 after their infant daughter starved to death while the pair played an online game for hours. The videogame the two were playing involved raising a virtual baby.

Mystery of two identical UFO's almost 1,000 miles apart caught on Google Street View

- Two mysterious and identical UFO's almost 1,000 miles apart have been observed on Google Maps - raising questions as to what they are and how they were photographed there in the first place.
The red orb-like shapes are visible to all users of the application online at Jacksonville in Texas and at the Sky City Casino Hotel on 32 Indian Service Route 30, Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico.
At both locations the same object appears in the sky hovering over the street and was first pointed out to ABC News affiliate KLTV in East Texas by Andrea Dover who noticed the first UFO while using Google Maps to get directions.

To see the Texan UFO you don't even have to enter a street into the search bar, just Jacksonville, Texas and go to street view, pan around there it is.
To date no one has been able to explain the image, especially not the residents of both towns who seemed clueless as to what the glowing red flying saucer could be.
It it not clear how the second identical image in New Mexico was discovered.

The object that is seen in the Texas Google Map image was shot right by the Landmark building at the 69 and 79 intersection, near to Sadler's Restaurant and right across the street from a Taco Bell restaurant.
The most popular theory as to what the orbs are in reality are sun glare from the camera or the reflected arches of a McDonald's restaurant.
KLTV-TV, the local ABC affiliate even sent a reporter to investigate the image, but all he managed to find was that most of the residents of Jacksonville said 'Wow' a lot.

'No one I spoke with had seen anything strange over Jacksonville, and although it could be a lens flare or an unexplainable reflection of some nearby object, I saw no indication of anything which fell under that umbrella,' said reporter Jamey Boyum of KLTV-TV.
'We have contacted Google to see if they are aware of the object, and we have not heard back from them.'

Whole Foods confirms it knowingly sells products containing Monsanto’s GM corn

Ronnie Cummins of the Organic Consumers Association has been protesting Whole Foods for several years, demanding the company label the GMOs it sells. Whole Foods management has foolishly ignored him.
In fact, until recently his efforts achieved relatively little traction, but all of a sudden “he appears to be a prophet,” a friend told me yesterday. Yep, Ronnie Cummins was right, and the fact that Whole Foods has sternly resisted labeling the GMOs it sells has the company in a virtual P.R. panic.
Why? Because Whole Foods CEO John Mackey confirmed in a blog post three days ago that Whole Foods knowingly sells Monsanto GM corn in numerous products. And yet at the same time Whole Foods refuses to make its day-to-day shoppers aware of this horrifying fact. He says:
The YouTube video showing our store Team Members giving conflicting responses to a question about GMOs reminds us that while we try to keep all our 70,000 Team Members up-to-speed on the latest information, clearly we need to do more. Some products in our stores DO contain GMOs…
As a result, masses of Whole Foods customers and even employees are operating under the illusion that Whole Foods sells no products containing genetically engineered ingredients. This was confirmed by the recent Organic Spies video which was censored by YouTube because it dared to tell the truth about Whole Foods.
Whole Foods shoppers have been betrayed
Imagine the shock of brutal reality when Whole Foods shoppers learn the truth. They will be appalled. They will feel lied to… betrayed. Wasn’t Whole Foods supposed to be a place of TRUST? Where the food could be trusted? Where people don’t have to conduct their own investigations of all the ingredients because Whole Foods has already done that for them? Isn’t that why people are willing to pay a premium for the groceries they buy at Whole Foods?
It turns out that Whole Foods sells a surprising amount of the same GMO-infested processed junk foods that you can buy everywhere else: Safeway, Kroger, etc. It’s all emblazoned with the “Natural!” claim, of course, which usually means “Contains GMOs” because the word “natural” has absolutely no regulatory meaning whatsoever. And instead of doing something about it, Whole Foods CEO Mackey just says GMOs are “pervasive” as if there’s nothing that can be done about it. Does he not understand that Whole Foods could simply refuse to BUY foods containing GMOs?
