Vandals destroy Christian cemetery in Israel in apparent hate crime

Some 30 headstones have been smashed in a Christian cemetery belonging to a Catholic monastery located not far from Jerusalem. A local cleric called it a deliberate desecration while the police opened a probe into a hate crime.
The vandals tore down concrete crosses marking dozens of graves at the cemetery belonging to the Beit Jamal monastery, a popular pilgrimage and tourism site, located some 30 kilometers west from Jerusalem near the two of Beit Shemesh. The tombstones were toppled and some tombs were damaged as well.
The damage was discovered by the monks, who visit the graveyard every few days. They believed that the incident was not a mere act of vandalism. "They wanted to smash, to pull down, a symbol of the Christians, the cross,” Father Antonio Scodo, responsible for the upkeep of the Saint Stephen's Church graveyard, told AFP, calling the incident an act of “desecration.”
Police has opened an investigation into the incident, calling it a “hate crime.” However, it said that the act of vandalism might have actually taken place “several weeks” ago, adding that they had no suspects so far. Meanwhile, the incident caught some attention from the local activist groups, Israeli officials and even foreign states.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement, condemning the incident. The ministry’s spokesman, Emmanuel Nahshon, called cemetery’s desecration a “despicable act.” He also said that “Israel is committed to combat any form of hatred and intolerance against all religions.”
The Italian embassy in Israel said it was “shocked and saddened” by the incident and called for mutual respect between religions in the Holy Land. The Polish embassy denounced it as“an unimaginable act of anti-christian vandalism,” adding that its consul in Tel Aviv “has already intervened.”
The site was visited by a representative of the Holy See’s nunciature to Israel and Cyprus, who expressed his hope that this “hate crime will be persecuted by police and clearly condemned by [the Israeli] government.”
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem, Wadie Abunassar, doubted whether the investigation into this case would be successful. The Israeli security services“failed to bring anybody to justice” following earlier cases of vandalism against the monastery, he said.
“We almost don’t see security and/or educational treatment to this dangerous phenomenon by the state authorities, especially while top officials in the country claim as if Christians are doing very well in it,”Abunassar said, as cited by the Jerusalem Post.
The Beit Jamal monastery, located close to a large community of ultra-Orthodox Jews living in Beit Shemesh, is still said to have good relations with the Israelis who visit it to buy handcrafted ceramics, honey and olive oil, according to the Israeli media.
At the same time, the monastery has also been repeatedly targeted in numerous hate crime attacks over the recent years. In 2013, some people threw firebombs at the facility and spray-painted phrases “price tag,” “death to the Gentiles,” and “revenge” on its hallways.
In January 2016, dozens of crosses at its cemetery were toppled, in the midst of a wave of attacks against Palestinians and Arab Israelis. In September 2017, some vandals smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary, damaged the furniture and broke several stained-glass windows inside the monastery’s sanctuary. The investigations of all these incidents have not led to any arrests.

The witches at Catland Books, Brooklyn’s “premiere occult bookshop and spiritual community space,” have announced that they’re hosting a second ritual to hex Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
The first ritual to hex Kavanaugh, as well as “all rapists and the patriarchy at large which emboldens, rewards and protects them” will take place this Saturday, October 20, and sold out less than a week before any major publicity, Dakota Bracciale, Catland co-owner and creator of the hex on Kavanaugh, told Broadly. More than 10,000 people have marked themselves as “going” or “interested” on Facebook since the event was published. Because Catland has a maximum event occupancy of 60, organizers are expanding the hex into multiple rituals and events. (Catland’s June ritual to hex Trump and his constituency was eventually expanded into three ritual events.) The second ritual to hex Kavanaugh will take place on Saturday, November 3, and tickets are available for $10 on eventbrite.
Bracciale describes the hex on Kavanaugh as an act of “spiritual solidarity and sociopolitical resistance.” Half of the event’s proceeds will be donated to charities: 25 percent to the Southern Poverty Law Center and another 25 percent to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. The remaining earnings will be used toward renovating Catland in order to insulate and weatherproof the venue for winter.
The initial event has been covered on an international scale and has already garnered quite the backlash, with Catland receiving “death threats” over the phone and on social media. The bookstore has already stated that they will have site security for the first event, and plans to do so again for the second.
“It strikes fear into the heart of Christian fundamentalists,” Bracciale says of the backlash. “That’s one of the reasons that we do it. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. We don’t subscribe to this bullshit, pacifist, love and light, everybody just get along thing. If you want to hijack the country; if you want to steal the election; if you want to overturn Roe v. Wade; if you want to harm people who are queer; well guess what: We’re not doing civility. If you’re going to be these awful bullies, you have to understand someone is going to punch you back and it might as well be a bunch of witches from Brooklyn.”

‘Netanyahu’s time is over’ – former Israeli PM Olmert calls for revival of his 2008 peace plan

It will take mere months to strike a deal with Palestinians if Israel returns to its 2008 two-state proposal, and the only ones opposing the plan are Benjamin Netanyahu and his circle, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said.
“There is no question in my mind that Netanyahu’s time is over. He’s gone,” Olmert told TV channel i24NEWS on Friday, explaining that the current PM lacks “moral courage” to introduce a settlement, similar to the one the government laid out ten years ago.
Olmert, who governed Israel from 2006 to 2009, offered nearly complete withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the West Bank and the Arab-populated East Jerusalem, with placing its Old City under international trusteeship. He also proposed the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to allow Israel to keep a small portion of the Palestinian land, containing major Jewish settlements. In return, Tel Aviv was to cede roughly the same amount of land to the Palestinian Authority.
Palestinian leadership rejected the plan back then, but Olmert believes that if such a deal would reappear of the table today, things would be completely different. He is “certain” that the Palestinians will sign off to the same model now.
“I know Palestinians. Many of them think that their failure to sign an agreement with me towards the end of 2008 was a historic mistake,” the former Kadima party leader said. He added that the only ones opposing such a deal would be “extremists” like Netanyahu and his allies who reject the two-state solution.
Ehud Olmert is a controversial figure in Israeli politics. He was given a six-year prison sentence for graft and bribery but was released on parole last year, after serving just 16 months. In mid-2000s, he championed the unilateral disengagement from Gaza – the idea loathed by the current government, which says that pulling out of Gaza exposed Israel to terrorist threats. During his TV interview, Olmert insisted that withdrawing from Gaza was the right call.
It is wrong to “exaggerate” the hazards coming from the missiles, launched by Hamas from Gaza, Olmert stated, citing the success of the Iron Dome air defense system.
“Rocket attacks are very unpleasant but they don’t pose any strategic threat to the State of Israel.”
According to the former Prime Minister, it is crucial for Tel Aviv to “separate from the Palestinians” and have borders “recognized by the international community.” A deal with Palestinians would “dramatically change the environment” in the Middle East, and will allow Israel to flourish, Olmert concluded.

Netanyahu claims plot by Israeli president to topple him

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the regime'spresident Reuven Rivlin and a former minister of conspiring to topple him.
According to Hebrew-language daily Israel Hayom, Netanyahu has been delaying a decision on bringing forward the 2019 elections, due to fears that Rivlin could task someone else with forming a cabinet.
Under the scheme, Rivlin would use his prerogative as the head of the Israeli regime to name an alternative Likud candidate to head a post-election cabinet.
Netanyahu told a gathering of his right-wing Likud party on Wednesday night that former Likud minister Gideon Sa’ar had sought to conspire with the president to compel him to step down from the premiership.
"I know that a former Likud minister has been holding discussions with the coalition and concocted a subversive plot, with me winning a large victory at the next elections and him making sure I am not prime minister," Netanyahu said.
Sa'ar, a former cabinet minister and a rising star within Likud, on Thursday publicly denied any such maneuvers, while Rivlin mocked the claim as "paranoia" on the premier's part.
Sources close to the prime minister have also claimed that Netanyahu had found out about a plot to oust him from power, even if Likud won the election.
It is the president, whose role is otherwise ceremonial, that decides following an election which member of the Knesset will be the next prime minister, should he or she successfully cobble together a viable ruling coalition.
Following the 2009 legislative election, Netanyahu's Likud was only the second largest Knesset faction with 27 seats to Kadima's 28. Nevertheless, then-president Shimon Peres tasked Netanyahu with forming the next cabinet.
Haaretz said, "If Netanyahu decided against moving up the elections it's not because President Rivlin or former Likud minister Sa'ar is out to get him, but rather to avoid coinciding with an indictment that might lose him the elections."
Netanyahu faces possible charges in separate corruption investigations, leading to speculation that he will eventually be forced to step down. On October 5, police quizzed him for a 12th time as a suspect in various cases.
The scandals resulting from accusations against Netanyahu and his inner circle have raised questions about his political survival.
Netanyahu, who maintains his innocence in several corruption cases, is not obliged to step down as prime minister even if he is formally charged.
Israel's next legislative elections are scheduled for November 2019 but early polls could be held if Netanyahu's ruling coalition faces a crisis.

‘David fighting Goliath’: Image of shirtless Gaza protester goes viral online

A striking image of a shirtless Palestinian protester has gone viral, drawing comparisons with the iconic French Revolution Painting ‘Liberty Leading the People’ and being described as a “David fighting Goliath” moment.
The photograph, which was captured in northern Gaza on October 22 by Mustafa Hassouna who works for the Turkish Anadolu Agency, shows a 20-year-old A'ed Abu Amro with a Palestinian flag in one hand and a slingshot in the other as smoke from burning tires billows behind him.
Contacted by Al Jazeera, Amro said he protests with friends every Monday and Friday and that he was “surprised” that the image went viral and that he didn’t notice any photographer near him. Friends spotted the image making the rounds online and shared it with him.
Amro told Al Jazeera that while the purpose of his protests was not to have his picture taken, the viral moment has encouraged him to continue demonstrating, adding that the flag he is carrying in the now-viral image is the same one he brings to every protest.
Palestinians have been protesting along the fence with Israel for months, demanding the right to return to the land they see as rightfully theirs and demanding an end to Israel’s blockade of Gaza. More than 200 Palestinians have been killed during protests since March, with thousands more injured.
On Twitter, many reacted to the photo with amazement, with some even suggesting the photographer deserves a Pulitzer prize and others saying it is so remarkable it looks “like art”.

‘Unacceptable & disruptive’: Israel seeks talks as Jordan demands its farmland back after 25yr lease

Jordan has announced its intention to reclaim full sovereignty over farmland leased to Israel as part of the 1994 peace treaty. Calling such a change “unacceptable” after so many years, Israel has vowed to renegotiate the deal.
“We are practicing our full sovereignty on our land,” King Abdullah II said Sunday, announcing the Kingdom’s intention to opt out of parts of the peace treaty which permitted Israelis to use 405 hectares of their farmland. In an “era of regional turmoil,” the King stressed, “our priority in these regional circumstances is to protect our interests and do whatever is required for Jordan and the Jordanians.”
Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994, part of which included handing over lands of Baqoura (Naharayim) and Ghumar (in the Arava region) to Tel Aviv for 25 years which Amman can claim back if it cancels the existing arrangement. The deadline for renewing the leases is set for October 25
The head of Central Arava Regional Council expressed grave concern over the idea that farmland which they have got so used to will have to be returned to its owner. “The agricultural lands in the Tzofar enclave are significant to the security of the area, the state, the livelihood of the residents and agriculture in the central Arava,” Eyal Bloom noted, pointing out that if the land is reclaimed by its owner, 30 Israeli farms in the area would cease to exist.
“It is unacceptable that after so many years, there would be such a huge disruptive change,” Bloom emphasized.
The news, however, was well received in Jordan, with many officials praising the “historic” decision, “which serves the higher interests of Jordan.” The King’s announcement was prompted by mass public pressure and demands for the monarchy to reclaim their pastures. Taking to the streets Friday, Jordanian activists shouted in unison “The people want national honor” and “The story is about national sovereignty.”
In the meantime, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cautiously expressed hope that Jordanians will change their mind. He stressed that he will work with Jordan in an effort to try to renegotiate the land agreement which is automatically renewable unless either Tel Aviv or Amman give a year’s notice to terminate the deal.
“We will go into negotiations with them on the option of extending the existing agreement,” Netanyahu said. Since Jordan and Egypt are the only two Arab countries in the world that have a peace treaty with Israel, Netanyahu stressed that the Israeli-Jordanian treaty serves one of the “main anchors of regional stability.”

Another Vatican PR disaster? Pope Francis wears ‘rainbow’ cross during Youth Synod

VATICAN CITY, Italy, October 19, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Pope Francis' Vatican invited another public relations debacle Wednesday when photos came out in Vatican News of the Pope wearing what many thought to be a "Pride" cross decorated in the colors of the rainbow.
The rainbow cross promptly garnered reaction on social media as a nudge-and-a-wink endorsement of the LGBT movement.
There exists an explanation for a non-LGBT origin of the rainbow cross, and its colors don’t precisely resemble those of the gay “pride” rainbows used by the LGBT movement.
Young people from Panama and some Latin American Synod fathers presented the multi-colored cross for World Youth Day 2019 to Francis, according to a tweet in Italian from the Holy See’s Vatican News service. Other bishops in the photos with Francis are wearing the rainbow cross as well.
“The Holy Father greeted them with joy and blessed them,” the tweet stated.
Still, some Catholics say there’s no other way to read the message conveyed by the pope showing up in official Vatican photos wearing a rainbow cross.
English theologian and author Adrian Hilton questioned outright on Twitter whether the rainbow cross would be considered as a show of LGBT support on the part of Francis.
“Is @Pontifex affirming 'Rainbow Church'?” Hilton asked. “How will the world read this symbolism?”
The bloggers at Creative Minority Report (CMR) said it doesn’t matter whether the pope wearing the rainbow cross was an intentional pro-gay message, because it would be taken as such either way.
“If they meant it as a gay symbol, they are unfit for office and should resign,” CMR said. “If they didn't mean it, they are too stupid for words, unfit for office and should resign.”
OnePeterFive Founding Publisher Steve Skojec noted that the read on the rainbow cross would be an automatic gay-rights thumbs-up as well.
“If you're seeing people explain how the rainbow World Youth Day Cross isn't about LGBT that's because everyone automatically thinks it's about LGBT,” Skojec said. “Nobody needs to explain something that's obvious. And the people who made the cross know it.”
The cross was developed by CELAM (the umbrella group for the Latin American Bishops’ Conferences) and came from the organizers of WYD 2019 in Panama; its colors each represent a region within CELAM’s ministry.
This fact notwithstanding, what jumped out most obviously was the rainbow colors – the commonly recognized symbol used by the LGBT movement. Additionally at issue is that the rainbow is on a cross, which, certainly when worn by a pope, should symbolize Christ’s sacrifice for sinners through His Passion, death and resurrection.
The photo of Francis wearing the rainbow cross was also provocative given its timing amid widespread apprehension that the Youth Synod is being used to advance the normalization of homosexuality within the Church. For the first time in a Vatican document, the term “LGBTQ” has been included in the Youth Synod working document. Small groups within the Youth Synod have already called for the Church to recognize “other forms of family” and to pay more attention to homosexuals and the “realities” they face, specifically mentioning “marriage,” surrogate pregnancy, and adoption.
Some on social media fixed on the cross being from CELAM and its rainbow look differing from that of a gay “pride,” some also saying that the gay “pride” rainbow is not as recognized in some Latin American countries.
Responding on Twitter to some of these protestations, Catholic author Stefani Nicholas said, “I disagree.”
“It’s not about the rainbow cross,” Nicholas said. “It’s about the sum of his actions as Pope, and how this is just example of his total lack of care for the scandal these “misinterpretations” cause…”
English blogger Laurence England jested about the idea the rainbow cross could be explained away as anything other than heralding the Church’s reported clandestine lavender network.
England tweeted, “Pope Francis: Nobody who works here wears gay lobby ID badg- Delivery Man: Your bulk order of rainbow-coloured 'I'm in the gay lobby' badges has arrived, Your Holiness! Pope Francis: Mgr Ricca, will you sign for this? I'm busy...”.
Francis wore the rainbow cross alongside his pectoral cross, one of the symbols of a bishop’s office, which is “distinctive of the Order of Bishop, the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders.”
Vatican PR blunders
The pope’s PR team, whether the Vatican Press Office or the Secretariat for Communications, has stumbled more than once in the past, at times walking gaffes back, other times leaving them up in the air.
This occurred quite notably last month by the release of a photo with the smiling faces of Francis and USCCB leadership captured during what was an emergency meeting in Rome on the clergy sexual abuse crisis in the U.S.
The photo raised the question of just how seriously the Church hierarchy takes the sex abuse scandal.
Further, regarding any possible misinterpretation of the rainbow cross hanging Wednesday from Francis’ neck, some Catholics say his pontificate has used up its allowance for possible misunderstandings of its communications.
The Francis pontificate has seen continually mixed messages on the faith, not the least of which was the pope's pronouncing the infamous “Who am I to judge?” quip now ubiquitous in being wielded to justify homosexual activity.
Francis also sent a troubling signal in 2015 when he accepted a Communist Hammer and Sickle morphed to a crucifix from his friend Bolivian President Evo Morales.
Francis caused similar consternation at the Youth Synod’s opening Mass October 3 when, rather than a traditional papal ferula, a metal rod topped by a cross, symbolizing papal authority, he instead presided over the Mass with forked bamboo-looking staff, minus the cross. While the claim was made that the staff was a gift from youth for use at the Synod, it strongly resembled a Stang, or Wiccan forked staff.

China is launching a fake, extra-bright moon to cut the cost of city lights

In a move that sounds straight out of a sci-fi paperback, China is planning to launch the first artificial ‘moon’ into orbit in order to replace street lights and reduce energy costs.
Chinese scientists say the man-made moon, which is essentially an illuminated satellite, will be in orbit by 2020. It will be eight times brighter than Earth’s moon and will shine down on the city of Chengdu, the capital of the southwestern Sichuan province.
It’s hoped the innovation will replace the need for streetlights and will reduce annual electricity costs by up to 1.2 billion yuan ($173 million).
Residents shouldn’t worry that it will “light up the entire night sky,” Wu Chunfeng, chief of the Tian Fu New Area Science Society, said to China Daily. “Its expected brightness, in the eyes of humans, is around one-fifth of normal streetlights,” he said, adding that it could even assist emergency services during blackouts and natural disasters.
The ‘moon’ will only illuminate a 50-square-kilometer area, as it’s much closer to Earth than our real moon. It will sit about 500km (310 miles) away, compared to the moon’s 380,000km (236,000 miles).
If the project proves successful, China plans to launch three more moons around the country by 2022. “The first moon will be mostly experimental, but the three moons in 2022 will be the real deal with great civic and commercial potential,” Wu said.
Before it makes its city debut, however, the moon will have to be tested in an uninhabited desert so that its light beams don’t interfere with people or Earth-based space observation equipment.

US economy about to collapse, taking down dollar & American standard of living – Peter Schiff

Tuesday's US stock plunge following a massive selloff on global markets is seen by some analysts as a sign of more bad things to come. RT talked to veteran stock broker Peter Schiff to explore the issue in depth.
After the dramatic early drop, US stocks recovered but finished lower after a wild day on Wall Street. By the closing bell, the Dow was down 126 points, or 0.5 percent, recovering most of its early losses. The Nasdaq closed down 0.4 percent, while the S&P 500 shed 15 points, finishing 0.6 percent lower.
According to Schiff, who currently serves as the CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, the stock market is definitely looking like it's heading for another bear market.
"All the signs are already there. Look at what's happening out there. The stock market is falling, 40 percent of the S&P is already in a bear market. Look at homebuilders, the housing stocks, the financials, the retailers – all these are the same things that were happening in 2007 leading to that crisis," the strategist told RT America.
The economist urged people be prepared for not only an economic crisis, but a political crisis as well with the current administration likely to take the blame. According to Schiff, the US national currency is set to meet with the worst losses.
“So, what you've got to do is get out of US dollar assets. The dollar is going to be the biggest casualty along with the American standard of living,” he said, adding that foreign stock markets, especially emerging markets, currently depressed by the strong dollar would see a strong rise.
“They are going to see a boom, when the dollar weakens,” Schiff said.
“Look at the price of gold up another eight bucks, but it's still about $1,230, gold's going to new highs, it was at $1,900 in 2011, it's going to go much higher this time,” the analyst added.
According to the economist, the US household debt that is about $15 trillion represents a crucial issue for the standard of living in the country.
“Everybody is loaded up with debt, and it's not like we began this monetary experiment without much debt. We had a lot of debt in 2008. In fact, the financial crisis was about debt, it was about our inability to pay the debt that we had,” Schiff said.
“But instead of addressing the problem and allowing the debt to be paid down, the Federal Reserve led us down the primrose path into much deeper debt by keeping interest rates at zero and holding them for so long. The Federal Reserve actually encouraged an overly indebted nation to borrow even more money.”
The expert stressed that interest rate hikes would only worsen the current situation, as all the facets of American society that are leveraged to the hilt, including individuals, corporations, the federal government, state and local governments.
“So, everybody is loaded up with debt. And guess what? Interest rates are now finally rising, and that means the cost of servicing that debt is going up, and this is going [to] be a problem just like adjustable rate mortgage was a big problem in 2008, when these things were resetting,” he said. “People couldn't afford to pay. Well, the same thing is going to happen on a national scale. Rates are growing up, and we too broke to pay.”
According to Schiff, there's no way to avoid the chaos and normalize things. “It's impossible, because in fact we kept it going so long that collapse is going to be that much bigger, and sooner we face that reality the better. But no politician wants to face that reality, they want to pretend everything is great.”
The tax cut pushed by the US President Donald Trump is also set to worsen the current concerns about stocks, the economy and the living standard, according to Schiff.
“If the government is collecting less revenue, then the deficits are getting bigger and so the government has to borrow even more money, and that becomes an even bigger problem,” he said. “What we need is smaller government, but nobody wants to shrink government, including Donald Trump, who is now the defender of Social Security and Medicare.
“He wants to launch another nuclear arms race and start the space race, so it's all about spending more money, so Trump wants to spend more money and cut taxes at the same time. That's completely reckless.”

Emerging economies stockpiling gold in expectation of US dollar banking system collapse – analysts

Countries around the world are turning to gold as uncertainty about the global economy rises. Trade wars and the aggressive policies of the United States are making emerging economies withdraw from dollar assets, analysts told RT.
“In the near future we can witness a big change in the rules of the game. At the beginning of the year, developing countries were the first to feel investor panic. If a crisis in Latin America and South Asia doesn’t surprise anybody, now is the time to worry about the largest economies of the world,” Mikhail Mashchenko, an analyst at the social network for investors eToro in Russia and CIS told RT.
“The aggressive US policy in recent years has forced some countries to look for an alternative to the dollar and replenish their gold reserves. Worries about the future growth of global economy are an additional incentive for purchases. Many question Donald Trump’s protectionism,” the analyst added.
There are signs that the global financial system dominated by the US dollar could collapse, says financial institute FinIst analyst Denis Lisitsyn. These signs include the uncontrolled emission of money from different countries, an increase in US interest rates, trade wars, the rapid rise in energy prices, geopolitical tensions in Syria, Iraq, the war in Yemen, he says.
“Many countries are buying gold in advance. They understand that paper money is constantly eaten up by inflation, equities will sharply fall in price in case of a crisis, and foreign deposits can be arrested, confiscated or frozen,” he said.
Hungary, Poland, Russia, China, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia are all hoarding gold, notes Vladimir Rozhankovsky, LIFA, expert at the International Financial Center.
“There are few alternatives to the US Treasury bonds in terms of volumes and market liquidity, but more prudent countries want to boost their reserves. Gold is, in fact, the only alternative. Even for those who do not believe in it,” he said.
Under such conditions, many central banks view gold as a traditional safe haven that allows them to ensure against possible turbulence in the markets, says Mark Goihman, leading analyst at TeleTrade. “After all, gold usually grows in price during periods of crises, and it can serve as additional support for the national currency. Many countries, in particular, China and Russia, turn to gold in opposition to dependence from the domination of the dollar. They are reducing dollar assets in their reserves,” he said.
Not only China and Russia are into gold, notes FinIst’s Lisitsyn. Germany has repatriated more than 300 tons of gold, and the Netherlands returned about 100 tons of bullion. Turkey bought 187 tons of gold last year, and has repatriated gold from the US Federal Reserve.
Iran also used gold to stabilize their economy. “Iran was forced to switch to gold payments. Weak economy and soaring inflation forced Tehran to throw gold money into the domestic market. After that, the economy stabilized, and the currency strengthened,” Lisitsyn said.
“Many neighboring countries, such as Turkey, also benefited from gold settlements with Iran. Turkey got a positive trade balance and saw the lira stabilize,” he concluded.

President Donald Trump confirmed Saturday that the United States plans to leave a landmark nuclear weapons treaty with Russia over claims Moscow has violated the deal.
The three-decade-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, known as the INF, was signed in 1987 by president Ronald Reagan.
'We're the ones who have stayed in the agreement and we've honored the agreement, but Russia has not unfortunately honored the agreement, so we're going to terminate the agreement and we're going to pull out,' Trump told reporters in Elko, Nevada.
'Russia has violated the agreement. They've been violating it for many years. I don't know why President (Barack) Obama didn't negotiate or pull out. And we're not going to let them violate a nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons (while) we're not allowed to.'

Trump spoke as his National Security Advisor John Bolton was in Moscow to meet with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, ahead of what is expected to be a second summit between Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin this year.
U.S.-Russia ties are under deep strain over accusations that Moscow meddled in the 2016 presidential election, as well as tension over Russian support for the Syrian government in the country's civil war, and the conflict in Ukraine.
However, Washington is looking for support from Moscow in finding resolutions to the Syria war and putting pressure on both Iran and North Korea.
No new summit between Trump and Putin has been announced, but one is expected in the near future.
The two leaders will be in Paris on November 11 to attend commemorations marking the end of World War I.
A senior Trump administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said another potential date would be when the presidents both attend the Group of 20 meeting on November 30 to December 1.

Donald Trump has vowed to cut financial aid to a number of Central American countries while also declaring a national emergency in light of the caravan of migrants making its way to the US border.
“Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border,” he wrote after Mexican riot police failed to contain thousands of people from crossing into the country.
The caravan, mostly Hondurans, crowded into the Mexican border city of Tapachula over the weekend after trekking on foot from the Guatemalan border. Organisers claim there are now more than 7,000 people in it, which will take about a week to reach the US border.
President Trump has repeatedly called for immigration law reform in light of the influx of undocumented immigrants fleeing rampant gang violence and poverty in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. He has made the issue – and his hardline stance – central to the upcoming midterm elections in Congress.
“I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy [sic]. Must change laws!” Mr Trump said. “Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the US. We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them.
“Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in,” the president wrote. He has repeatedly called the thousands on the Mexico border “criminals”.
He has been speaking about the issue of immigration at dozens of political rallies across the country ahead of the 6 November midterm elections. He is due to hold another “Make America Great Again” ally in Texas on Monday night.
“Every time you see a Caravan, or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our Country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic Immigration Laws!,” Mr Trump said, as a reminder his supporter base.
The sentiments are echoed in his now infamous campaign rally line: “Democrats create mobs, we create jobs”.
The president also restated his threat to cut off foreign aid to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, much of which is aimed at violence prevention and poverty reduction.
According to the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2016, the US gave Honduras nearly $128m, Guatemala $297m, and El Salvador $75m in aid across all federal agencies mostly aimed towards counter-narcotics activities, military training, agricultural subsidies, and violence prevention.
By next year, those sums were projected to fall to $69.4m for Guatemala, $65.8m for Honduras, and $45.7m in the case of El Salvador.
Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said that while National Guard troops are currently supporting the Department of Homeland Security on the border, the Pentagon had not been asked to provide additional support. There are currently 2,100 National Guard troops along the border in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, according to the Pentagon.
Mexican officials also issued their own warning to the caravan, stating only those who met the country’s standards for refugee status would be allowed to enter at its southern border but to no avail.
Several people rushed a bridge gate at the border between Guatemala and Mexico or crossed the Suchiate River to enter. As crowds persisted, Mexican police did allow women and children to enter and seek refuge.
A similar caravan of approximately 1,500 people made its approach in April, just weeks before the Trump administration began its family separation policy and putting National Guard troops along the 2,000-mile US-Mexico border.
The separation policy stemmed from a zero-tolerance approach to illegal immigration where all adults face prosecution, even if it means removing them from infants travelling with them.
Several of those who had crossed without documentation were seeking asylum, which requires physical entry into the US before an application for the protected status can be considered per American immigration laws.
The Trump administration continues carrying out its bid to build a large border wall, the funding for which is still up for debate in Congress.

French Flee To Hungary To Escape Effects of Mass Migration

French citizens are now joining Germans and others seeking a new life in the Hungarian capital of Budapest in order to escape the negative effects of uncontrolled mass migration.
More and more French are seeking to escape to what they see as the safety of Budapest according to a new documentary called Hungary: the Promised Land that was broadcast on French television this week, France Info reports.
The 20-minute documentary examined the lives of several French citizens who now call Budapest home including a young woman named Elsa who came to the city two years ago after living in the notorious, heavily migrant-populated suburbs of Paris.
The young woman claimed that she moved after being assaulted and robbed on three separate occasions in her previous neighbourhood. “I think that when you are master of your country, fundamentally, in an era of globalization, the immigration factor comes into play,” she said.
Elsa isn’t alone in seeking refuge from mass migration in Hungary as other western Europeans have flocked to Budapest and other Hungarian cities. In 2016 German media spoke to a Hungarian real estate agent who noted a sudden upturn in interest from “disaffected” Germans.
Months later, German television station ZDF spoke to a German couple who had made the move to Hungary. Valentin and Jennifer Duräder, a couple in their 20s, explained that they were afraid to raise their then unborn child in a post-migrant crisis Germany.
The number of western Europeans moving to Hungary has not escaped the attention of the Hungarian government, with Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcoming western Europeans to his country in a speech in early 2017.
“We shall let in true refugees. Germans, Dutch, French and Italians, terrified politicians and journalists who here in Hungary want to find the Europe they have lost in their homelands,” Orban said.
Gaddafi and Libya - Deep State tactics 101

On June 7th 1942, Muammar Al-Qaddafi was born in a tent near Sirte, Libya. He was also raised in a tent, as a Bedouin. He joined the military in 1961 and quickly rose through the ranks. On September 1st 1969, Qaddafi and a movement consisting of other young army officers overthrew King Idris. Qaddafi, who we may more commonly know as Gaddafi, had become ruler of Libya; He was 27 years old.
What follows is the truth about the significant events of his leadership, leading up to his demise at the hands of a mob on 20th October 2011. He was beaten and subsequently shot dead, much of it videoed and widely available on the Internet.
I will be quoting the major players of this "game" when possible as it speaks volumes.
David Cameron, while Prime Minister of Britain, said in the commons; "We must not tolerate this regime using military force against it's own people."
Another commentator on American TV declared "The only reason they're interested in Libya is about the oil. Do you think we'd be in Iraq if their major export was broccoli?"
Cameron was lying. The guy on American TV was on the right track, oil was of course involved but that's just half the story. The other half of that story being that it was about currency; Gaddafi planned to introduce the gold Dinar with the goal of it becoming a single African currency.
Dr. James Thring, an anti-war activist, explained; "As soon as you say you're going to change from the US dollar to something else [Dinar] you're going to be targeted... most African countries were keen on the idea."
During the late 1990's, Gaddafi called upon African and Muslim countries to join forces in order to create this new currency. The idea was that it would rival the Dollar and Euro; they would only sell oil and their other natural resources for gold Dinars.
The implications of this would alter the dynamics of world economics; a country's wealth would be determined by how much gold they had, not dollars.
At the time, Libya had 144 tons of gold. The UK had double that amount of gold but 10 times the population. Crucially, how much gold did the federal reserve in America have?...
In their own words; "The federal reserve does not own any gold at all. We have not owned gold since 1934."
At the time, a political analyst said the following regarding the federal reserve's little gold problem; "... any move like that [the Dinar] would certainly not be welcome by the power elite today who are responsible for controlling the world's central banks... that would certainly be something that would cause his [Gaddafi's] immediate dismissal... and the need for other reasons to be brought forth for removing him from power..."
"Other reasons"? Does this sound familiar? It should do. In 2000, Saddam Hussein announced that Iraqi oil would be traded in euros, not dollars. What followed? Sanctions plus an invasion to boot, based on the lies (other reasons) about WMDs. The real reason why was because America was desperately trying to prevent OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) from changing the currency of oil trading in all it's member countries to the euro.
America, quite literally, can't afford to let the petrodollar become obsolete.
So it began... First, Obama started the propaganda train with rumblings that Gaddafi was only maintaining power by use of mass violence on his people. He had lost his legitimacy, he should leave, NOW,etc... Then came the first wave of sanctions; Bank accounts and assets were frozen that belonged to Libya itself, Gaddafi, his family and senior regime officials.
Standard puppet master pressure techniques.
Then came the possibility of a no-fly zone over Libya, with David Cameron saying he would work with his allies with regards to this; he also refused to rule out the use of "military assets".
They were basically saying that Gaddafi was killing his own people and WE needed to help them. Nothing to do with the potential economic shift with regards to paying for Libyan and OPEC oil. Gaddafi was suddenly deemed to be a brutal tyrant, it was truly cosmic timing...
Does this ring a bell again? It's the same bell; this was the exact same pretext for Saddam Hussein and the invasion of Iraq. The New World Order were fooling us all over again.
Getting back to Gaddafi, the mainstream media told us how sanctions would increase the financial pressure on him and MSM also told us that 80% of Libya's oil fields were in rebel hands.
The BBC cranked up the propaganda by telling us how most of Libya had been taken over by anti-Gaddafi rebels. At the same time, Gaddafi was stating facts when he said the West only wanted to take action so it could seize control of Libya's oil.
He also warned of a power vacuum if he was removed which would be filled by Al-Qaeda, not Libyan rebels as we were told. It has been proved since that Al-Qaeda were indeed attempting to take parts of Libya at the time, the only thing stopping them dragging the region into chaos was Gaddafi and the support of his nation.
In March of 2011, Gaddafi gave a joint interview with "journalists" from the BBC, ABC news and The Sunday Times. They claimed they understood the region, to which Gaddafi scoffed. He even answers in English when asked about the so-called "rebels" by repeatedly telling them "it is Al-Qaeda".
It's clear America were backing Al-Qaeda... AGAIN. Bin Laden himself was not part of any formal group, until the Americans invented one for him. Al-Qaeda translates as "The Database", a network of controllable extremist "assets" used by the CIA to destabilise countries. It was initially created by the CIA (not Bin Laden) during the Russian-Afghan war in order to make sure Russia did not win. It worked, and it still does.
There is no evidence that Bin Laden ever referred to his or any other group as "Al-Qaeda" until after the 9/11 attacks; this was when he realised it was the term the Americans had given it.
In August 2011, around 600 prisoners were broken out of jail in Libya. They had been imprisoned by Gaddafi; they were all part of Al-Qaeda and they were now free.
And who did Obama and the UN support once fighting broke out between the escapees and Libyan forces?... Al-Qaeda and the rebels who joined them.
Obama, along with the UN and NATO, offered humanitarian aid and "support" to these so-called rebels and actually called for Libyan forces to lay down arms, for the sake of Libya... Direct support for Al-Qaeda.
Observers noticed that the "rebels" carried modern FN FAL rifles and that they appeared to be in new condition. These rifles had never been used by Libyan forces, at this time they were still using old AK-47's. There was no way the rebels could have got the weapons they did from Libyan military storage depots, so where did they come from?... The same question applies to the ammunition.
The answer? Western and Arab leaders met in Abu Dhabi to pledge financial support for the "rebels" to the tune of $1 Billion in order to depose Gaddafi. These countries included Italy, France, Qatar, Kuwait and Turkey. All this while Britain and America were running the show when it came to the bombing campaign and the training of rebels on the ground.
The New World Order had provided the people, money and equipment.
Regarding this, US senator at-the-time Ron Paul said the following on Fox News; "Nobody even knows who the rebels represent. And, there's good evidence that Al-Qaeda is there. So we may be delivering Al-Qaeda another prize; they'll be in Libya, they weren't there before... these unintended consequences of our foreign policy are so overwhelming, logic tells us we shouldn't be dealing with our foreign policy in this manner... pretending that we can pick the dictators around the world. It's been very unsuccessful and American people are waking up to this."
So far, we can see that the Deep State forces had said they needed Gaddafi out because he was using the military against his own people. The same argument used to justify the invasion of Iraq.
All the evidence presented so far demonstrates that he was in fact using military force against rebels associated with Al-Qaeda. Rebels which were being backed by America et al to overthrow a leader who had transformed his country into one of the greatest in Africa.
Vladimir Putin had this to say on the subject; "The coalition said destroying Gaddafi was not their goal. Then why bomb his palaces? Now some officials have claimed that eliminating him was in fact their goal. Who gave them that right? Did he have a fair trial?... the bombings are destroying the country's entire infrastructure. When the so-called civilised world uses all it's military power against a small country... I don't know if that's good."
One US airstrike on a house of Gaddafi's killed his 18-month old daughter.
ALIGN=LEFT>Gaddafi had figured America out when he spoke at a meeting of Arab leaders; "America fought alongside Saddam Hussein against Khomeini. He [Hussein] was their friend. Cheney was a friend of Saddam Hussein. Rumsfeld, at the time Iraq was destroyed was a close friend of Saddam Hussein. Ultimately, they sold him out and hanged him... one of these days America may hang us."
The CIA - Facilitators of everything
A former CIA counter-terrorism analyst was interviewed by CNN. They asked him what he made of reports that the CIA were in Libya, making contact with and vetting the rebels.
When asked if this was setting the stage to arm them, he replied; "I don't think there's any other possible reason for it. The president [Obama] has clearly sent the agency in to find out who he [Gaddafi] is supporting... and to see what kind of human material we would have to work with if the president decided to arm and train these people over the longer term."
"Human material"? This alone sums up what the CIA and the rest of the Deep State think about people.
The rest of the interview basically concluded that the CIA were going to decide who was the "most palatable" group to take over from Gaddafi. Most palatable meaning most obedient.
He did however suggest that the best solution was to have not got involved in the first place, "this was none of our business". First-class distraction; once CIA always CIA, he knew that America could not afford to stay out of Libya. He also knew that Gaddafi was fighting the New world Order.
He finished with a telling comment; "In the Muslim world, this is Americans killing Muslims AGAIN. And it looks like it's for oil."
Libya just a piece of the jigsaw
General Wesley Clark [retired] was interviewed on March 2nd 2007 and gave a deeper insight into the plans of the puppet masters through a leak he received;
"I'v just got this [document] off him [unknown] down from the secretary of defence's office today. This is a memo that describes how we're going to take out 7 countries in 5 years. Starting with Iraq, then Syria and Lebanon; Libya, Somalia and Sudan, finishing off with Iran."
The achievements of Gaddafi
Whatever you think of Gadaffi, crazy dictator or man of the people, I have trawled the internet message boards and comment sections and have seen nothing but love for him from Libyans and those from many other countries who knew the truth; they all have an equally strong resentment towards America and it's allies about what happened.
Why was he so respected by his people? Let's look at what he actually did for them.
In 1951, Libya was the poorest country in the WORLD. Before this invasion by America for the oil, Libya had the highest standard of living in Africa; higher than that of Russia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia also.
Below I will list some facts, all of which were implemented by Gaddafi; (figures in US dollars)
- Electricity was free for all Libyan citizens.
- There was no interest on loans; banks in Libya were state-owned and loans were taken at 0% interest by law.
- Having a home was considered a human right.
- All newly married couples received $50,000 off the government to help buy their first home.
- Education and medical treatment was free.
- If Libya could not provide appropriate medical care for someone, the government paid for them to get it abroad.
- If you bought a car, the government subsidised 50% of the price.
- The price of petrol in Libya was 14 cents per litre. That's about 60 cents a gallon in US money.
- Women received $5000 when they had a child.
- Gaddafi carried out the world's largest irrigation project, the "Great Man-Made River" (GMR). It supplied fresh water across Libya (The US and UK, among others, were quick to get a piece of this action at the time too, investing heavily).
He did many more good things; he did some bad things too, my intent has not been to portray him as an angel. But on balance, are these the actions of an evil dictator that the Deep State, via their media, made him out to be?
The overthrowing of Gaddafi left behind a huge mess, just as he predicted. What happened in Libya is a classic example of "The Establishment" in action.
I believe, much like Gaddafi himself did, that the Deep State are in fact the evil dictators; controlling who and what they want at any cost, by all means necessary.

Bigger boat: World’s largest amphibious aircraft makes maiden water take-off & landing (VIDEO)

China’s new flying boat, the AG600, has successfully performed a water take-off and landing for the very first time. The plane is said to be the largest amphibious aircraft currently in operation, equal in size to a Boeing 737.
The plane test was performed on Saturday outside the city of Jingmen in central China. Footage shows the colossal machine taking off on water, flying, landing and somewhat gracefully rolling ashore to take part in a ceremony marking the event.
The aircraft is designed for maritime rescue, long-range transport and firefighting operations. The machine can take up to 50 passengers on board and can take in some 12 tons of water in just 20 seconds. It can lift the water up to 50 meters altitude and extinguish fire in an area of over four square kilometers in one spray, according to state media.
“The current sea rescue is mainly conducted by vessels, and a limited number of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The emergency rescue mechanism, equipment and professional crew all need further enhancement,” said Lu Guangshan, chief engineer of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. “The AG600 is a step towards addressing the needs of both the maritime economy and forest firefighting. It could also boost China’s middle and long-range emergency sea-rescue abilities.”
The AG600, powered by four domestically built turboprop engines, is roughly the size of a Boeing 737 plane, boasting wingspan of 38.8 meters, a length of 36.9 meters and a maximum take-off weight of 53.5 tons, according to Chinese state media. The machine surpasses – in dimension, at least – the Russian Beriev Be-200 and Japanese ShinMaywa US-2 flying boats.
The title of the largest-ever flying boat, however, is still retained by the WWII-era US-made behemoth Hughes H-4 Hercules. The monstrous machine, powered by eight piston engines, had a wingspan of nearly 100 meters and length of 67 meters, weighing 180 tons at take-off. The prototype aircraft was made almost entirely of birch, due to wartime aluminum shortages, but gained the nickname ‘Spruce Goose’ for some reason. The machine was designed too late to actually take part in the war and never entered serial production.

Kleenex maker Kimberly-Clark says it will rebrand its “Mansize” tissues after consumers complained the name was sexist.
The company says that following a “consistent increase of complaints on gender concern,” the product will instead be named “Kleenex Extra Large,” as some media outlets are reporting.
The marketing message on the larger tissues’ packaging describes the product as “confidently strong” and “comfortingly soft.”
Kimberly-Clark said it in “no way suggests” that being both soft and strong is “an exclusively masculine trait,” according to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, and the company does not think that the “Mansize” branding suggests or endorses gender inequality.
“Nevertheless, as we remain committed to developing the best possible products for our consumers and take any feedback extremely seriously, we decided to renovate our current product and update the product sub-brand as Kleenex Extra Large,” the group noted.
Big question: Has the company blown it with this move? Time will tell.
One Boston-area sales professional who sells products including tissues says the “mansizing” is nothing to be offended about — it’s just marketing.

He added, “But in today’s world, it’s probably a better idea to encourage this buying behavior by males in other ways — through television commercials that include men, for example. Today, even the silliest things are considered ‘anti-woman,’ so companies need to be aware of society’s mood and adjust accordingly.”
Other products that have come under the feminism microscope include socks, deodorant, and baby toys.
A far more serious issue has emerged in the wake of the #MeToo movement, which purports to shine a spotlight on all things unfair to women. Does the movement actually help most women out in the real world?

Titanic ll set to sail in 2022 along the same ill-fated route, promising ‘an authentic Titanic experience’

A replica of the ill-fated ship Titanic is set to sail in 2022, following the same route as the original ship, while boasting of an “authentic Titanic experience.”
Spearheaded by Australian mining tycoon Clive Palmer, shipping company Blue Star Line announced its plans to have the Titanic II completed and sailing within the next four years.
“Blue Star Line will create an authentic Titanic experience, providing passengers with a ship that has the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, while integrating modern safety procedures, navigation methods and 21st century technology to produce the highest level of luxurious comfort,” Palmer said in a statement. “Titanic II is a unique project that will generate unprecedented international exposure and public interest.”
Palmer originally announced his plans to build a replica of the doomed original in 2012, with the hope of having it set sail by 2016. However, the plans were put on hold over a financial dispute.
The planned $500-million replica will be built to the same size dimensions of the Titanic, and will carry over 2,400 passengers and about 500 crew members.
This time around, Titanic II will have enough lifeboats for everyone onboard in the event of a tragedy. According to Blue Line, the ship will have 18 fully enclosed, motor driven lifeboats, each with a capacity of up to 250 people.
“The ship will follow the original journey, carrying passengers from Southampton to New York, but she will also circumnavigate the globe, inspiring and enchanting people while attracting unrivalled attention, intrigue and mystery in every port she visits,” Palmer said. “In 1912 the Titanic was the ship of dreams. For over a century Titanic’s legend has been powered by mystery, intrigue and respect for all she stood for.”
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the early morning hours after striking an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland, just four days into its maiden voyage, claiming the lives of over 1,500 people.

Strong M6.8 earthquake hits Greece: Largest quake in years for Europe felt in at least 8 countries

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck in
the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece early Friday, briefly
triggering a tsunami warning. No significant damage has been
reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 16.6km (10 miles) below
the sea floor. It reached the island of Zakynthos, a popular tourist
destination, with first reports indicating that some of the buildings
there have sustained damage.
The quake was so powerful the jolts
were felt across the region in at least eight countries, including
Malta, Libya, Italy, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Turkey:
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) warned about a possible low-scale tsunami that could last for several hours after the earthquake, citing sea level changes following the tremor.
Locals were advised against going to the beach to try and observe the tsunami. On Twitter, the EMSC cautioned that while in most places the wave will likely be limited to 20cm (about 7in) high, it could be significantly bigger locally.
The 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Greece left cracked concrete in the tourist island of Zakynthos. Power has been cut off, but no major injuries were immediately reported.

Indonesia volcano eruption: Anak Krakatau 49 Eruptions in 24 Hours, Evacuations Ordered
October 19, 2018 – In Indonesia, 49 explosions occurred in Anak Krakatau volcano over the last 24 hours. The residents of the area were warned of evacuation from the region.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Authority (BMKG), there were 49 explosions in the volcano between Sumatra and the Javanese Islands in just one day.
BMKG officials, the observations made, the mass of the volcanic ash mass reached about 400 meters high, he said.
Mr Purwo Nugroho said: “Mount child of Krakatoa erupted almost daily since September 16, of this year. The eruptions occurred, throwing sand and ash, incandescent lava.
Anak Krakatau is located between Java and Sumatra and is one of the 76 volcanoes in Indonesia to be part of the infamous Ring of Fire – one of the worst affected areas by earthquakes in the world.
The active volcano formed from the caldera of the nearby Krakatau volcano following a devastating eruption in 1883 which killed at least 36,417 people according to the then-ruling Dutch authorities.
Staff at MAGMA Indonesia (Multiplatform Application for Geohazard Mitigation and Assessment in Indonesia) noted in a Sept. 23 statement that Mount Anak Krakatau, or “Child of Krakatoa,” erupted 56 times on Sept. 22, spewing lava and ejecting dark smoke.
A third volcano, Gamalama, erupted on the earthquake-hit isle of Sulawesi spewing plumes of ash into the sky.
Fears are now growing over a huge Ring of Fire shift, with the region seeing a large amount of seismic activity in recent days, hitting Indonesia hard due to its position on a large grid of tectonic plates.
Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) said in context of a previous Krakatau eruption that “this is an opportunity for volcano tourism and education—not all countries have volcanoes. Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes, or 13% of active volcanoes in the world.”
Indonesia is at the meeting point of three major continental plates – the Pacific, the Eurasian and the Indo-Australian plates – and the much smaller Philippine plate.
Lying on the Sunda Straits between Java and Sumatra islands, the original volcanic island Krakatau claimed more than 35,000 lives in a deadly eruption in 1883. The highly active Anak Krakatau, is a new island formed in the same location by an underwater eruption in 1927.
